Not just a tax item. First, you need to be cleared to have the license, firearms it covers or not. Next, you lose your license if you have and do not report and surrender a defaced unlawful firearm, automatic or not. IIRC. Plus criminal record check, references, etc. It will be interesting to see the backstory. Maybe the "vet" was a draftee whose service was unwilling, forced on him. Maybe he was a SDS consituent sent to Nam.
Looks like you've assumed the position of judging without a factual base, rather than the one qualified to give the sentence based on testimony.

Never used in a crime? No other criminal record? Something is wrong with this picture.

7 years for a 70yo man who just lost his wife of 40 years is torture and cruel and unusual punishment. It would be more merciful to just shoot him now. Sentencing is out of control.

Well if we want to get Constitutional about it, the man committed no crime whatsoever. Jefferson and Washington and the rest of the founders would certainly agree that there was no crime.

I can see a vet is more of a threat to society than a murderer.
What does the fact that the guy was a vet have to do with his owning an illegal, fully automatic rifle?
Had they left out the fact that the guy was a vet and just identified him as a John Doe have made a difference in your opinion? I'm going out on a limb here but I suspect it would have.............

This should mean they are working their way down the stack of cases and should get to arresting Eric Holder around 2032 for the Fast & Furious crimes.

#66:
"7 years for a 70yo man who just lost his wife of 40 years is torture and cruel and unusual punishment." He received that sentence because of his white privilege. If he were a ghetto gangsta he would have been sentenced to community service at Parks and Recreation.

Based on the story there doesnt seem to be much there. Except buying an automatic rifle was even illegal back in the 1980s. I wonder if this is one of the MK Specialties "re-welded" M14s that had BATF so stirred up around 20 years ago? They seem to have made it an agency priority to track down every last one of those.

Something is wrong with this picture. Yeah. The offender's perception of what the law is and the consequences for deliberately flouting it.

He could have stolen a gun and shot a young woman in the head & killed her, he'd be a free man.
oh wait, that's only for illegal aliens from mexico with multiple arrests and deportations.

Interesting, and it makes sense. These guns were never inspected and accepted by the government which is how they made their way to the market.
I now recall seeing a picture of one of these with the flash suppressor which were copied from the British .303 Jungle Carbine. I’ve never seen a real one.

It’s our Supreme Court now. This should be the case to overturn NFA, GCA, and FOPA.

Im thinking were missing something here.... Like why it took 38 years for BATF to get to him on their list? Or maybe they had a drug dealer in need of one and the BATF inventory was low.
