Northbound migrant group doubles in size, enters Guatemala

AGUA CALIENTE, Guatemala (Reuters) - Up to 3,000 migrants crossed from Honduras into Guatemala on Monday on a trek northward, after a standoff with police in riot gear and warnings from Washington that migrants should not try to enter the United States illegally.

The crowd more than doubled in size from Saturday, when some 1,300 people set off from northern Honduras in what has been dubbed "March of the Migrant," an organizer said. The migrants plan to seek refugee status in Mexico or pass through to the United States.

Reuters could not independently verify the number of participants, but images showed a group carrying backpacks and clogging roads near the border, some waving the Honduran flag.

The impoverished nations of Central America, from which thousands of migrants have fled in recent years, are under mounting pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to do more to curb mass migration.

Put elements of a US active army division on the border where the migrants attempt to cross, to back up the civilian border guards.

“The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S. is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!” Trump said on Twitter.

What good is our military if they cannot be used to defend the country?

They better hurry. Dems have already registered all of them to vote but there’s not much time before the Dems lose interest (Nov 8).

Trump should pass the same message to the President of Guatemala since it looks like at least some of the migrants have now crossed into Guatemala.

When they get close to our borders, Pres. Trump should close all traffic at all border crossings from Mexico and let them deal with the problem.

We’ll see what happens when they get to Mexico. We just signed an agreement with Mexico, and the Mexicans like it.

They don’t have to let this mob through.

These folks didn’t just decide to do this. Someone organized them. I’d like to know who.

Who is feeding all these people? Moving that many on foot for that distance is a major logistical problem. Not to mention the cost. Soros? DNC?

They said on TV they were impoverished in their home country. Have any of you seen the size of these impoverished people! Some of the ladies are at least two ax handles wide. (Arkansas means of measurement)

Who’s really behind them I wonder?

We have been dumping dollars into Honduras to help curb a crime problem that is out of control, and it is actually working and crime is indeed being reduced.

So my question would be are these folks truly refugees from oppression? Or outlaws on the run to keep from getting locked up?

Like you mention... Where are the women and children indicating true refugees? I think these are criminals on the run from a law enforcement campaign that is finally working.

Why wait, blow the bridges before they get here. There must be some in those tropical climates. If not the bridges, do in the rail roads too. Mine the harbors.

I I do not understand why the Guatemalans let these guys cross. I’ve crossed their border with Belize and Mexico several times and they have very well-fortified borders with guards with shotguns and machine guns. They make it clear in every meaningful ways that you will not pass unless all your papers are in order and you pay the fees and do things by the book. They are clear that violation of their laws will result in fines and prison time. Guatemala has no reason to allow these people in. They pose a liability in every way: they will have to be fed and watered and looked after and they pose a crime and disease threat and they take all these things seriously down there. There is no rational reason to allow them through. If it is a humanitarian interest it would be easier and cheaper to take care of them on the spot and repatriate them back to Honduras. It’s obvious to me that they in some way have been paid off. By “organizers.” It’s shameful we have no investigative journalists who want to dig in to this. Shameful. Frankly I don’t see how this works for the Dems politically, either. Most voters don’t want open borders. I’m mystified. Only corruption provides an answer.

That was my first thought also. I tried to dig deeper but got road blocked trying to find any past associations with the “organizer” who happens to be a former lawmaker.
