Here is my favorite World War II hero, the British general Orde Charles Wingate (1903-44). He wore a pith helmet while fighting the Italians in Ethiopia, and the Japanese in Burma. When he was killed in a plane crash, the British only knew he was on the plane because they found his pith helmet among the wreckage. If he could wear one why not the First Lady?

If you ever read about him, it's pretty interesting. I think I remember reading that he was an uncle (or some relation) to Lawrence.... of Arabia.
He was a real character. He is credited with CREATING the IDF... they know him well

Ah, classic British hip clutch.

Orde Wingate was a fundamentalist Christian born in India and credited with saving India from the Japanese invasion.
The Brit war hero also trained Jewish militias in the British Mandate before he was banned from the Land of Israel by the Brit government. The militias he trained became the Israeli army. He is well remembered and honored in Israel.
He died in a US Army Air Corps plane crash and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
