The reason for the clown show in the senate hearings is simply that the Dems know that they are going down big in the coming election.

If they succeeded in derailing Kavanaugh, it would have drummed up high levels of fervor in their base. However, having failed - and done so using the most egregious tactics possible - it appears to be having the opposite effect. The dems are becoming demoralized and republicans are ticked off - and looking for piles of broken glass to crawl over to get to the polls.
That may sound pollyanna-ish, but I think the recent polls coming out show it. We’ll know for sure in about a month.
