McConnell vows Kavanaugh vote ‘here on this floor, this week’ ( "doubled down Tuesday")
Washington Post ^ | October 2, 2018

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) doubled down Tuesday on his vow to hold a vote by the end of the week on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, saying he was the victim of open “floodgates of mud and muck.”

“One thing we know for sure: The Senate will vote on Judge Kavanaugh here on this floor, this week,” McConnell said during a floor speech in which he also dismissed some recent media reports about Kavanaugh’s decades-old behavior.

His comments come as Democrats are pressing for a more expansive FBI investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh. On Monday, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee called for FBI interviews of about two dozen people who might have information relevant to three Kavanaugh accusers.

McConnell characterized that as a part of an ongoing effort by Democrats to “move the goal posts” on Kavanaugh’s confirmation and predicted they would be unsatisfied when the FBI completes its work this week.

Democrats, McConnell said, “will not be satisfied unless they have brought down Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination.”

Hate to say it, but whatever it is, it's worth it.

That is one view, but IMO since the Dem's know how to negotiate, it didn't come cheap and is in fact likely to be a break even. Nor do I think the country is at risk with a failed K nomination (immediately go with Barrett and come back with K after he and his family have a rest, if he agrees).

Breaking even is a no way to win anything and I would prefer to have the shoot-out here and now. With this president in office there may never be a better time. I think quite a few here on these pages are ready to draw a line in the sand and, if crossed, respond in like force.

But Kavanaugh proved to be of tougher stuff and they failed to force him to withdraw.

Kavanaugh had a big thing in his favor -- something the Democrat/Left is terrified of like Dracula to garlic -- the Truth ... the demonstrated fact that he is innocent!

Why do I get the feeling that maybe The Turtle doesn’t really care how the vote turns out, he’s just giving himself cover.

Hope I’m wrong, but I’ve become a bit jaded.

Now I believe they have trashed themselves into a corner and awakened republicans and conservatives.

You get it. Their only plan was to win the PR battle last week, and they lost. There is no plan B for dems. Three things that you can take to the bank: 1) Mitch will hold a vote this week, 2) Kav will NEVER give up, 3) Trump will never give up. They have the votes. Relax and save your beer for the celebration this weekend!

I have to believe that he knows something we don’t.

It seems likely that democrats have something on Flake.

Either a carrot or a stick.

He better call Flake, Collins and Murkowski into his office.

He should have last week, recessed the Senate and let the President appoint him, then have the vote at their leisure.

Let not your heart be troubled. Mitch doesn’t spout off unless he has the goods. This will be over by the weekend. And the Sunday shows will be like election night where you record it just to see the long faces after they lose. And the dems WILL lose. As far as the 3 republican stooges, don’t worry about them. We’ll get a bunch of new improved senators in a few weeks.

Lindsey Graham on Hannity last night seemed to be pretty sure they have the votes for Kavanaugh. Let’s pray so.

Any Republican that does not vote yes will have the political career ended.

Period.

Flake may not care. But Murcowski and Collins do.

McConnell may take the vote to the floor this week, but he’s not going to have the votes to get Judge Kavanaugh confirmed.

Flake is not going to be voting for him, and he’ll have other RINOs like Murkowski and Collins joining him to oppose Kavanaugh.

I hate saying this, but apart from a miracle, this is what’s going to play out.

I just listened to Jay Sekulow’s radio program and they were saying that if Judge Kavanaugh isn’t confirmed by the end of the week, Monday at the latest, it’s all but certain he won’t be.

Nothing he can do about Flakehole. That rat bastard already has after-Senate contracts signed with liberals.

But Collins and MurKommunist, he can influence.

Agree.
Flake is a lost cause.
Collins and The Cowsiki are not lost causes.

I think it’s a pretty sure thing that Flake will not vote for Kavanaugh. I think Collins and Murkowski will. So, he’s confirmed with Pence breaking the tie.

McConnell better hold a vote. Because if something surfaces in the meantime, and the democrats start screaming, you can be sure that two of those three will vote no.

We have 51, Flake and one of the lady’s vote no, bringing it to 49. No democrat votes. WE lose.

I don’t know why McConnell get so much hate. Sure he is the very definition of a swamp creature, but he has run the Senate with an iron fist, which is MUCH harder than running the House given the power individual Senators have to obstruct, delay, and obfuscate. His use of Harry Reied’s ill advised nuclear option to fill judicial nominations alone elevates him to what may end up being the most influential Republicans of the 21st century. Maybe I will add a turtle to my garden.

You betcha. The last time a Senator voted against their OWN party’s nominee for the Supreme Court? That would be Robert Bork, with

John Chafee (RI), Bob Packwood (OR), Arlen Specter (PA), Robert Stafford (VT), John Warner (VA) and Lowell P. Weicker, Jr. (CT) all committing the act on the Republican side. Naturally all Republicans. All names that will on in infamy.

They should hounded into oblivion or burned at the stake depending your political preference.

We have to allow that sometimes people change for the good. Otherwise why try to influence them?
