I asked the same question. Doesn’t the Capitol have a whole series of underground passageways to allow lawmakers and staff to move quickly and not get caught up in crowds?

Yes, and the Senate Office Buildings are connected by an underground tram that can move them to and from the Capitol — House members just walk to and from.

I've walked the tunnels underground the Capitol back in 1990 but since 9/11 my impression is that security was really tightened up.

Not sure at all how those two astroturfed “protesters” made it into the Members Only elevator.
