Lisa Murkowski Delivers Message: Take Kavanaugh Accusations Seriously

WASHINGTON — Republican Party leaders may be insisting that they will install Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, but Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is offering a blunt warning of her own: Do not prejudge sexual assault allegations against the nominee that will be aired at an extraordinary public hearing on Thursday.

“We are now in a place where it’s not about whether or not Judge Kavanaugh is qualified,” Ms. Murkowski, a key swing Republican vote, said in an extended interview in the Capitol Monday night. “It is about whether or not a woman who has been a victim at some point in her life is to be believed.”

One of two Republican woman in the Senate who supports abortion rights — Susan Collins of Maine is the other — Ms. Murkowski was always expected to be a critical vote in Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation process. But she is making clear that, beyond matters of reproductive rights, she is deeply troubled by Christine Blasey Ford’s story of a sexual assault by Judge Kavanaugh when she was 15 and he was 17.

In the interview, Ms. Murkowski emphasized how invested she is in assessing Dr. Blasey’s story. She said she worked behind the scenes last weekend to ensure negotiations between Republicans and the accuser’s lawyers did not fall apart because of an “arbitrary timeline.” She canceled a meeting of the Senate committee she chairs on Thursday to ensure her schedule was clear.

Arbitrary timeline? Is she joking? Does she expect the senate to wait another 36 years? Women like Dr. Ford and Deborah Ramirez, made it more difficult for actual victims to come forward and seek help. They damage the #MeToo movement.

“”Do not prejudge sexual assault allegations against the nominee “”

Does she even listen to herself?

New senate precedent: Accusations are enough to derail a confirmation (no evidence necessary)

A month ago I thought DC was as dysfunctional as it could get. I was wrong. The country has 10 million Ds who hate Rs and Rs who hate Ds. 10 million is a low estimate and the hatred is severe and lying is nothing if it advances “my tribe”. If this precedent is allowed to be set, we can forget any confirmations in the future. We will CERTAINLY not have another Trump judge confirmed at any level with this “rule” as precedent. Still to be seen if the GOP reacts by following the same rules when a D occupies the WH again.

The details of this case are irrelevant. Every decision sets a precedent in DC and this will be the new bar.

The Cowski can be bought for the right set aside. Just shut up Lisa and tell us your price, because if the past is any indication you always have one.

Same here. Klobuchar is a moron. If she cared so much about these allegations why isn’t she demanding Ellison quit?

“It is about whether or not a woman who has been a victim at some point in her life is to be believed.”

Nobody is suggesting women shouldn’t be believed. We should all be discussing this particular case, and it never should have turned into a cause célèbre.

Speaking of this case, there is no indication whatsoever that the allegations have any veracity; there is every indication that they are merely designed to derail and/or delay the nomination. No specifics have been provided, and what has been expressed has been denied by those named.

It’s a clearly transparent political stunt that is damaging the nominee and the entire process — and the integrity of the U.S. Senate, for that matter.

Murkowski is a disgrace, as are a slew of other people paid to warm senate seats.

It’s 51-49, so Republicans can lose only one if the Democrats all vote no. A 50-50 tie is a win because of Pence.

Just shut up Lisa and tell us your price, because if the past is any indication you always have one.

At this point, whatever price it is, is worth it.

“It is about whether or not a woman who has been a victim at some point in her life is to be believed.”

Too stupid to be a Senator, or to be out in public unaccompanied.

Hearings of the Senate Judiciary Committee are not the place to be seeking, or giving, validation.

Have your hen party elsewhere.

so if we pick up 3? senate seats currently held by dems, and then revote right after the election (if he doesn’t get confirmed now), we could get him passed, correct?

But it’s okay for the Dems to pre-judge Kavanaugh guilty without any corroborating evidence.

Alaskans managed to defeat her in the Republican primary but enough Republicans joined Democrats to have her re-elected in the general.

She feels she owes them and they may be calling in her debt.

Frank Murkowski was one of the U.S. Senators from Alaska during the Bork confirmation debacle in 1987 -- for whatever that's worth.

I despise Murkowski but I have no problem with her saying this. The GOP has been playing this right from the moment Buzzy Ford first came out in public as the "accuser" in Feinstein's letter.

This is so wrong.

If we have to believe the woman accuser, then Judge Kavanaugh is guilty.

If Judge Kavanaugh is not guilty, then we cannot believe the woman accuser.

We can't do both.
