Woman may face charges for sheltering pets during Hurricane Florence

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) - A Wayne County woman could face charges after sheltering more than two dozen pets as Hurricane Florence impacted North Carolina.

Tammie Hedges runs Crazy’s Claws n Paws, a non-profit group which helps low-income families with veterinary bills, pet supplies and other needs.

She’s in the process of converting a warehouse space along Route 581 into a shelter. With the storm approaching last week, she offered it as an option for pets to stay.

“The goal was to make sure they were not out there drowning,” Hedges said. “We had an elderly couple, they were evacuating that afternoon, and there was no way they could take 18 animals with them.”

Through donations, Hedges brought in crates, food and other supplies to help the animals get through the storm. She said volunteers stayed with the animals 24 hours a day.

She said there were 27 animals there in all, including 17 cats and 10 dogs.

On Monday, after the storm had passed, she said she got a call from Wayne County’s animal services manager Frank Sauls regarding the animals.

She said he told her, “You can voluntarily hand over the animals, or I can go get a warrant.”

If I was one of the owner’s that had dropped my pet off to be cared for and found it had been stolen by animal control I would be livid. I would question whether the lady sheltering the animals even had the authority/permission to surrender the animals since their legal owners had not relinquished any claim on them. That being so I would argue that the animal control officer had no right to seize the animals. The only thing he should have done was contact owners to let them know to pick up their pet or make other arrangements. JMHO.

She did not have a license for doing a good deed in an emergency. What was she thinking?

This^

I guarantee that there is some law or regulation that prohibits this and it's nothing more than rent seeking by the petty bureaucrats of the county.
A bureaucrat that was doing nothing to pick up these pets.

Fire him!

The city manager should be chained to a tree in his backyard the next time his city floods.

She should prepare a bill and present it to the county. She should state that the county animal shelter and its manager were grossly negligent in performing their duties and a citizen was required to perform their duties. The county should evaluate their animal shelter manager and fire him if necessary.

There is another problem here besides authoritarian bureaucrats.

I don’t see any quotes where the govt officials threatened her with charges.

I see that a newspaper speculated; and workers hoped she wouldn’t be charged.

Imaginations running wild, or just poor reporting?

Thanks. So two counts of bad reporting: Didn’t report relevant quotes, and left out the part about her administering medication to the animals.
