Dem Senator Hirono: SCOTUS Seat Could Stay Vacant for Two Years
freebeacon.com ^ | 9/18/18 | Jeffrey Cimmino

Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono (D.) said Democrats could keep the open seat on the Supreme Court vacant until after the 2020 election if Brett Kavanaugh's nomination collapses and Democrats regain control of the Senate in November.

Hirono pointed to the long vacancy of Antonin Scalia's former seat as a justification for holding off on confirming any nominee from President Donald Trump. When Barack Obama was president and Republicans held the Senate, Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did not hold a vote on Obama's nominee Merrick Garland, and Hirono said Democrats could do the same if they had the Senate.

"I think we’ve had those kinds of vacancies before, and we certainly had over a one-year vacancy with Merrick Garland," Hirono told Politico Magazine. "So the world does not come to an end because we don’t fill all of the nominees."

An immigrant from Japan, and a naturalized citizen. Sure, she came as an child of divorce, on a “compassionate” exception, because her mother had been born in Hawaii, and was therefore “US Citizen” by birthright. This in turn was enough to bring young Mazie Keiko Hirono, with her two brothers, and she was naturalized at 12 years of age.

Also known as a rather extreme feminist, and while she may not be as fiery as Kamala Harris, she is just as obdurate in her opinions, and is something of a scold.

So far as can be determined, never married, which may or may not be indicative of other traits of personal nature.

LOL! I lived on the rock for 22 years (now 5 years removed) - not under the rock. Last I heard Hawaiian Gold was suntan lotion and also a coffee. But I am no expert by any means.

I’m ready for Hawaii to be reclassified to a Guam-type status to be honest...allowing them to have any influence in national afdairs has only been negative AFAIC

Is this the same Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono (D) who didn’t give a damn about all the credible rape (yes, RAPE) charges against Bill Clinton?

They continue to obsess over Merrick Garland, who would have given them a leftist majority on the Supreme Court at least until RBG dies. They never mention Biden saying in 1992 that President Bush should not be allowed to name a new justice if a vacancy occurred in that election year.

If the Hildabeast had won, Garland would not necessarily have gotten confirmed--she might have chosen a woman who was younger than Garland. But maybe the Senate would have confirmed Garland at that point before she took office assuming her choice would be even worse than Garland.

“...Is she the nuttiest Senator in the bunch?...”

Not sure about “nutty” but she did make a Freudian slip there. Accidentally told the truth.

I think it’s about time. Call for the vote and any rep senator that votes against him will be asked why. If they can’t come up with a reasonable answer, they lose their funding and they will be replaced on all the committees they sit on. This crap is getting idiotic. How can a majority get beat? Only if that majority holds a few people that don’t want to get with the program they vowed to stand by in a majority and recieved support and compensation for. You don’t want to do what is with the majority needs, they don’t need you. And the GOP should support his/her opponent in the next election with money and campaigning just to beat the malcontent. I think that’s called tough love.

Two years is nothing compared with the amount of time Hirono’s head has been, and will remain, vacant.

“this vacancy would be much longer than “2 years”.”

The hypocracy of the D’s is beyond the pale. They are hoping the midterms will somehow result in Democrats taking control of the Senate and therefor we should not only wait until then but until the next president to fill the seat, contending essentially the midterms are a national vote on the Supreme Court.

Yet the last time an election could have really been considered a referendum on a national policy they got plastered, and refused to accept the result. Never had there been so safe a seat for the Democrats as Ted Kennedy’s - yet when they lost his seat to Republican Scott Brown as a direct reflection of the opposition to Obamacare even by Democrats, they refused to allow the conventional process in the Senate to be observed and pushed the previously passed Senate version through the House without any opportunity for a House version and then using only filibuster free budget reconciliation as a way to address House concerns.

When Republicans end up gaining 4 to 9 Senate seats in November’s election, what will they then argue?
