Hirono: Dems could keep SCOTUS seat vacant for two years
The Hill ^ | 09/18/18 | Emily Birnbaum

Posted on 09/18/2018 7:21:47 AM PDT by yesthatjallen

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said the Democrats could keep Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court seat vacant for two years if need be should the nomination fail and should Democrats take the Senate in November.

Hirono said if a replacement for Kavanaugh needed to be found, President Trump should nominate a less conservative ideologue, or else be ready for Senate Democrats to keep the court seat vacant until after the 2020 presidential election if they win the chamber in November, according to an interview with Politico Magazine.

“I think we’ve had those kinds of vacancies before, and we certainly had over a one-year vacancy with Merrick Garland,” Hirono told Politico. “So the world does not come to an end because we don’t fill all of the nominees.”

Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court was roiled when California professor Christine Blasley Ford on Sunday publicly accused him of sexually assaulting her when the two were students at neighboring D.C.-area high schools in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has strongly denied the allegations.

The Hawaii senator said the new allegation had cast doubts about the nominee's testimony to the Senate two weeks ago.

During the hearing, Hirono asked Kavanaugh if he had ever sexually assaulted or harassed someone as a "legal adult." He responded that he had not.

“It somewhat stretches credulity, let’s put it that way,” Hirono told Politico.. “I think he didn’t want to lie about it, so one way you get through that is saying, ‘I don’t remember.’”

Hirono also called the allegations against Kavanaugh serious, even if was 17 years old at the time of the alleged incident.

“Seventeen is not exactly a baby, either," Hirono said. "These are serious allegations. She has a very credible story. I believe her. And now we have to do more than say, ‘Well, look at the timing!’ and ‘Well, it’s all politically motivated!’"

"This has to be taken seriously," she said.

Kavanaugh and his accuser are set to testify publicly on Monday.

Allow me to use this as a ping to my list, since I’m addressing this topic:

Next replacement is Amy Coney Barrett.

This is why it has surprised me that Ds went all in on Judge K. He is a conserv replacing (more or less) a conservative, but the next vacancy will be a hard-core radical leftist (is there any other kind?) being replaced by a conservative woman.

Barrett better be prepared. Whatever K is facing now, she will face something 10 times worse as she will be a “traitor to her gender.” D strategy, therefore, has been utterly stupid. They were never, ever going to stop Judge K, and never going to win back the senate. I’m wondering if this strategy wasn’t actually designed IN JULY when FinnkStink got the letter? Back then there was “some” hope they could retake the Senate.

A couple of other notes:
*You all saw TX Senate19, where the R won a Cankles+12 district in a blowout. Yeah, “muh blue wave.” Gee, no GOP enthusiasm?
*Young Kim, in CA, was supposedly “endangered.” Polling now shows her up 10.
*Curbelo in FL26 has solidified and is now considered safe.
*Word from my source “Ohio Wan” says Renacci, while down 2 in the latest poll (a D poll heavy with women) is “really tied” and “his ground game is unbelievable.” Ohio Wan says Renacci has scores of walkers out every week, all over the state. “He should win” OH said “Ohio Wan.” He continues to say Balderson and Chabot are safe. That’s two more off the “endangered list.”

I asked Ohio Wan about the gov race. Although an Ipsos poll has DeWine up 5, they don’t think he’s up that much. “He’s up 2. All his races in his career are pretty close. He rarely wins a blowout.” We’ll have OH early vote/absentee #s in a week.

*I continue to hear from Baris that Coffman in CO is likely to lose. Locals are more optimistic, but Baris says the district has been redrawn several times, each time with more Ds in it. He’s popular, but has a registration problem.

*In AZ, the McSally ads are killer! She is all over the tube portraying Enema as a radical commie leftist (i.e., as a Democrat). More important-—this is my wife’s take-—the images of Enema are UGLEEEEEEEE! This eats into the “prettiness factor” that Enema had going for her. McSally up 3, but the trend is all on her side-—was down 4 a month ago. She’ll win by 5 I think.

*The only polling not going our way are these goofy FL governor polls. Sorry, don’t believe for a second that the radical black panther will even come within 5 points of Scott. Baris skeptical of these polls as well.

*Both Flakey and Corkscrewed have announced their “disappointment” that Ford didn’t accept the offer to testify and will vote for Judge K. Cloture will come no later than Sept. 28, floor vote on Oct. 1.

And dat b dat!

Trump indicating he is fed up and will drain the swamp himself if these people don’t get in gear. If we hold the House in the midterms, watch out!

Oh, and to my surprise, there IS a grand jury in DC investigating McCabre, Deep Stroke, and Pageboy. Many thought months ago that Priestap had been supplying testimony. If you notice, he is the only one who is not ever named in these stories.

Trump today at 48% in Ras and one other poll. And there is a new polling outfit (”eutholithics” or something-—looks like it tilts R). I’ll get the name soon.

You got to laugh, “I don’t remember.” is Hillary’s pat answer to everything.

I wish a reporter had asked Sen. Mazie Hirono if she believed Juanita Broaddrick and if she did why didn't she object to a 'First Husband' being a rapist... and living in the White House. Guess the press whores for democrats...so it'll never happen.

And when/if Amy Comey Barrett is nominated, are the democrats still going to tell the men of America to “shut up”?

Thanks, LS. As always, your insight is appreciated.

“Trump indicating he is fed up and will drain the swamp himself if these people don’t get in gear. If we hold the House in the midterms, watch out”!

Hell yes! Trump is going to impress us even more.

Trump has grown a spine on many Republican wimps.

I think the Ds went all in on Judge K because they want to manufacture outrage within their own base to try to get them to the polls in November. Everyone talks about how difficult it is to get the Rs to the polls in midterms, I suspect that the Democrats have their own problems on that score and these manufactured outrages are more designed to get wacko Left to come out in November to vote for people that don’t excite THEIR crazy base.

I would be dancing in the streets if Trump had the opportunity to pick Amy Coney Barrett to replace one of the women on the court.

Amy Coney Barrett YES!
She’s the real deal. That will be a cat fight for the ages.
One that Amy will win.

So much good news... Now we need to get 'out the vote' and keep the good times rolling...

Zen Master, who has yet to be wrong on matters of the court, says she’s absolutely in the next 2-3 finalists. My guess is it will be her, a “woman for a woman.”

I think you’re right, and that the whole “Dem enthusiasm”-—which, BTW, Richard Baris still says exists based on his polling-—is a charade.

However, MN guys tell me NONE of their people will talk to pollsters, and very few voted in the primaries. Why?

“We all know who we’re going to vote for in the general, and it’s anyone with an R after their name. ANY candidate is better than the Ds.”

I saw that Young Kim poll, excellent news.

I wonder if the Bradley effect has anything to do with Gillum’s poll lead.

What do you make of this BS that Trump is “mad” at DeSantis over the hurricane tweets?

LOL

Let’s hope it’s not “Laughing Stock.”

BTW, poll just out from FL27 (Ros-Leithen’s seat, Cankles won district by 20): the R now up in a GOP poll by 7, the D up in D poll by 4.

This is a MUST HAVE for Ds to have any hope of winning the House. Baris wrote it off. So this is huge.

"LOL. What if Ginsburg croaks tomorrow? No rush to fill that spot... Exactly. The Dems don’t think beyond one move ahead."

* In the Private Sector you have "Key Man Insurance," they can't fly airplane's, race cars etc being an Exec.
* Their is contingency / succession plans in the private sector for these Exec's because life happens.
* The Congress can't run like that because of elections and by extension ditto that the SC.
* So they play politics because it is all they know.

But it is worse for the DNC. Breyer is getting long in the tooth, RGB we all know the drill, and Sotomayor's health challenges w/ Type 1 diabetes. This is on top of anyone one of them having a health event that puts them on the other side of the lawn or it forces them to resign. The ones I mention are another 3. Thomas is the wild card as rumors of him wanting to retire and motor home the US.

So, can you imagine 4 new SCJ's because of health, retirements, or passing on between now and 2024 aka the end of PDJT's last term? Gird your Loins, either the DNC moves back to normalcy or collapses because in their current state of mind and behavior. How does the Republic endure this DNC goat rodeo four more times?

GOP poll in FL 27 has R up 7.

SEVEN!

yes, the D poll has the D up 4-—but Cankles won this by 20.

It’s an absolute must have bellwether for them to flip the House.

The rat’s primary wish appears to be delay. “Monday is too soon to testify” give me a break lady.

They don’t want Manchin, Donnelly, and Heitkamp to have to vote on it before the election. Those 3 are between a rock and hard place, they’ll either piss off the majority in their own state or the party base that they need to turnout in order to win.

A no vote from Manchin is just what the doctor ordered for that race.
