New York Slimes: We’re Measuring the Economy All Wrong
New York Slimes ^ | September 14, 2018 | David Leonhardt

Posted on 09/14/2018 7:58:33 PM PDT by EdnaMode

Ten years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the official economic statistics — the ones that fill news stories, television shows and presidential tweets — say that the American economy is fully recovered.

The unemployment rate is lower than it was before the financial crisis began. The stock market has soared. The total combined output of the American economy, also known as gross domestic product, has risen 20 percent since Lehman collapsed. The crisis is over.

But, of course, it isn’t over. The financial crisis remains the most influential event of the 21st century. It left millions of people — many of whom were already anxious about the economy — feeling much more anxious, if not downright angry. Their frustration has helped create a threat to Western liberal democracy that would have been hard to imagine a decade ago. Far-right political parties are on the rise across Europe, and Britain is leaving the European Union. The United States elected a racist reality-television star who has thrown the presidency into chaos.

Look around, and you can see the lingering effects of the financial crisis just about everywhere — everywhere, that is, except in the most commonly cited economic statistics. So who are you going to believe: those statistics, or your own eyes?

Over the course of history, financial crises — and the long downturns that follow — have reordered American society in all sorts of ways. One of those ways happens to involve the statistics that the government collects. Crises have often highlighted the need for new measures of human well-being.

Funny how articles like this never appeared when Obama was President. The author also show stats that nearly 15% of men 24 to 54 aren't working, and wages aren't increasing. What percentage of these men choose not to work, or are illegally in the country? How can salaries increase if companies continue to hire cheap labor?

At the same time the economy is so terrible many retail and fast food places are having to close up or reduce hours because they cannot fill jobs.

They pumped the numbers to make Obama look like he was doing something, and the economy was not that bad, This is very well documented.

Those same Lagos are making Trump look like a freaking hero, and the media MUST find a way to stop it.

The financial crisis is Obama. Piled up more debt than all the other presidents combined. Debt that is hanging over all our heads about to crush our economy, and nothing can fix it. Trump would need to be in the White House for 20 years to fix it.

It's always a fun time if you can change the rules every time your opponent is doing well.

A halfway sharp high school graduate can become a C-Level executive. Show me another country where that might happen.

Well that would be nothing new. You do very little right ever as it is.

What did Obama do with the $787 Billion Dollar Slush Fund* congress gave him back in 2009?

* also known as “The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009”

How many of his cronies ended up with fat foreign bank accounts full of so-called “Stimulus” money?

I like the way this guy casually states that President Trump is racist without so much as a nod toward any reason to support that outrageous assertion.

It’s just a given. Everybody knows that... etc...

It's an odd thing. Back around 2009, although I saw some infrastructure work being done here in MA, I don't think I saw any really significant uptick in the work being done.

But right now? Under Trump? I think every road in the state is being repaved. Road crews are everywhere! And it doesn't seem to have cost us $787B this time around!

A team of academic economists — Gabriel Zucman, Emmanuel Saez and Thomas Piketty (the best-selling author on inequality) — has begun publishing a version of G.D.P. that separates out the share of national income flowing to rich, middle class and poor.

Since the GDP measures production, maybe we should measure how much the poor, middle and rich produce. But that would get people asking "Why the @(@* are we importing so many more poor people?"

You're damned right we're angry. THose responsible (I'm talking about you Barny Fag, and Jamie Gorelick, and Frankin Raines) were never held accountable. Nor have "We the people" gotten out money back plus interest that went to fund the bailouts. What we have gotten is: hordes of freeloading illegal aliens who are destroying our nations and our culture.

Oh, yes...the financial crisis - the one the Democrats said wasn’t happening and it was racist to suggest that it was:

Then the Democrats blamed the Republicans for it, of course.

Wait didn’t Obama just take credit for the Great economy we have now? Liberals cant decide how to spin their lies anymore. We will accept credit and place blame on the same event! Only in a liberal mind does this make sense.

Scott Adams said if Obama gets credit for the economy, he also owns the climate.

So Obama is complicit in hurricane production.
