My niece is going through the Merchant Marine academy in India, and is hoping to attend the US academy as well. Her dad is already a captain and is working to get certified for cruise ships. It’s nice to see this relatively ignored service get some recognition.

Civilian skippers piloted MSTS ships in 1945 into the 60s.
Were they Merchant Marine grads ?

I’m to understand that McCain wanted to gut the MM and turn it over to the low bid of the developing world.

Hear the words of Tet68... In the days of sail, merchants had to take to the ocean, it was the frontier, and most young men had a dream to go to sea. Today we should start a Space Merchant Academy so that the business of the future can prosper in space. Astronaut/Salesmen ready to move the goods of the future where ever they are needed and a profit can be made. This is fore told in numerous SciFi stories. Remember, Freedom only exists on the frontier, civilization always limits freedom to some extent.

I was rejected by the MMA and the Coasties because they don’t give waivers for eyesight and I wear glasses (at least they didn’t in the 80s).
I went to USNA instead.....what’s a sailor to do .....

Graduated from there and sailed for 20 years. Check out the tag line.
Annapolis makes officers, Kings Point makes Mariners! I’d take a fresh 3rd mate from KP on the bridge of a ship over an Annapolis grad any day.

My father says much the same thing based on his experience as a Kings Point grad with a career at sea as a third mate and as a USN officer during the Korean War.

Many were hawsepipers-went up throught the ranks starting as ordinary seamen, then able-bodied seamen, third mate, second mate, chief mate then captain. Time in rank was reduce; it was not unusual to see 24 and 25 year old captains.

The vision requirement have changed; 20/200 in each eye correctable to 20/40 in each eye. Zasik surgery is accepted I believe.
