385 miles south-southeast of Honolulu
Or a bit closer than Chicago to Memphis.
In other words, not really very close.
Perhaps the islands will turn over like Guam.

everything is on track ..Lane waekening due to shear...but already over a foot of Rain on the big island

this is very concerning...the main factor being huge amounts of rain and mudslides
if one looks at google Maps of Honolulu area for example...there are many homes built in valleys, slopes and runoff areas...
some notes:
1) this is the closest a CAT 5 has gotten to the Islands in recorded history...it will weaken but not the rainfall
2) The track is just SW of the Islands..this puts the islands on the dirty right side....also increasing SW shear will push the convection to the NE of center
3) any SE facing slopes will enhance any rainfall
4) Lane will leave a train of highly anomalous moisture in its wake...which will cause heavy rain to fall well after it passes
5) there are 1.4 million people on the Islands but only room for something like 300,000 people in shelters

I thought the same. Looking back over past years it appears that NOAA calls storms in the eastern Pacific Hurricanes.

If so the politicization of it from the Dems will be equally epic.
I should add there is no analog for this storm...there has never been a large powerful hurricane moving in from the south and basically stalling..
Hurricane Iniki in 1992 moved in from the south but only hit the low populated small western islands..and it was moving rather fast
I believe the peaks on the eastern islands will be the highest any hurricane has approached on record (13,000 ft)
This is greatly enhance rainfall...
The Dominican Republic is home to the Caribbean’s highest peak, Pico Duarte (10,128 ft.)

very concerned about the northern portion of the big Island the next few hours
up to 17 inches of rain had already fallen
radar is showing a long fetch of a feeder band moving in
Excellent soundtrack to that hurricane!
No change to previous thinking
Now a CAT 2(winds 110 MPH but it seems to be growing in size)..with over 30 inches of rain down on the big island
The core of the storm should start moving in soon
Worst case is if Ouha gets the heavy rain bands parked over it
the worst MAY be just east of them however rainfall wise
