Will Be Starting Freelancing Online Next Week (Can this be of value to you?)

Posted on 07/30/2018 3:07:40 PM PDT by RoosterRedux

Hey guys, before I say anything, please note that I tried to post this vanity in "general/chat" but there was not a category that fit.

Here's the deal.

I have just taken the (some) steps to start a freelance career.

I have been checking out freelancing for a while now at freelancer.com and upwork.com and others.

I am still an outsider looking in.

But I am going in...and I will share my experiences here for my fellow freepers.

I am going to start with freelance projects that are involved with MS Excel and VBA. Starting at the bottom and working up from there.

Here's the thing for Freepers.

There are many here who are retired or are planning for it.

If we can use our lifelong experiences to make a little money to pay for our retirement...let's go do it.

If any of you retirees or soon to be retirees are interested...let's get a conversation started.

I am going to start off doing MS Excel/VBA stuff and then start adding to my range.

I am a semi-retired businessman with lots of experience in the securities business. Was a CPA a long time ago.

I have a deep love of quantitative analysis so I'll probably stay pretty close to that.

As an aside, I got a Federal Tax ID (EIN) so I won't have to share my SS# with any employer.

Thanks for the explanation and good luck in your endeavor.

FWIW, I semi-retired last year and I love it!

If you also are thinking of freelance writing, I would like to read about your bike trip. You started in Florida?

I am rowing (a virtually row from my den) on my Concept 2 rowing machine. I started (on the map) from Fernandina Beach, Florida headed London.

It's not nearly as exciting as really being in the water, but at least I don't have to worry about sharks.

I am off the coast of New England at present.

As an aside, I was rowing too much and started having lower back pains, so I have move over to the indoor bike trainer which has my mountain bike mounted on it.

I don't include the bike mileage in my rowing expedition, but I usually ride hard for at least and hour a day now that I am on a respite from rowing. No back problems so far.

As to writing, I do enjoy writing but I don't know if I will do any freelance writing. I am mostly a numbers guy (at least that's the most fun for me) and will start out working in MS Excel/VBA and see where that leads.

VBA (Visual Basics for Applications) is just an easy and fun programming language to use in Excel. I picked it up running stock market analyses for myself. I learned that there is nothing a person can imagine that can't be done with VBA and Excel. There's a warning though...you might turn into a nerd.;-)

If you use Excel for anything, it's worth learning VBA. There are tons of youtube videos to help you learn and plenty of free advice all over the web.

It is simply amazing what can be done in Excel with VBA.

At my age, I don’t want to strain my brain too much.
But good luck in your venture.

Overall, Upwork is a great place to start. I’ve never had much luck with guru.com or freelancer.com but that could just be me. Upwork keeps my plate full these days, so I stay there.

A mixed bag. I have been freelancing for a long time. One time I started a specialty magazine with another fellow. He disappeared and I never got a dime. Another time I agreed to write for another magazine and that deal worked for several years. I sell several products as a 1099 employee and that has worked for several years. I have worked in aviation as a 1099 and that lasted 35 years. The major point is that you give-up security when you gain independence. Good luck.

p.s. Watch out for taxes. The IRS is ferocious and will try to eat you whole.

Thx for those tips.

I have been an independent contractor for years (working mostly in real estate appraisal and analysis).

My employer was my brother's small real estate appraisal and consulting firm, but I had no security because he had no security.

I am used to no security.
