(CNN) - For weeks, House Republican leaders have been working behind closed doors to thread the needle on an immigration bill that could secure the support of the bulk on their conference.
On Friday morning, President Donald Trump ended all that with a tweet.
"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November," Trump tweeted. "Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem. We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!" And, boom goes the dynamite.
Now. The so-called "compromise" legislation -- constructed by House Speaker Paul Ryan to make moderates and conservative happy -- was already on life support before Trump came in and pulled the plug.
A vote on the measure was originally scheduled for Thursday. It was then set for Friday. Then late Thursday, it was postponed until next week as GOP leaders insisted they saw a glimmer of hope to write a bill that might actually pass the House.
That hope is dead now. Imagine you are a conservative Republican resistant to the "compromise" bill because it provides a path to citizenship for DACA recipients. You now have every reason in the world not to come to the table and take a tough vote. The President literally said there was no point!
The question before Ryan and the rest of his leadership team is whether there's even any merit in trying to push for a vote on the compromise bill next week -- or even if it's worth making some of the changes on things like E-verify that their members expressed a desire for over the past 48 hours.

For the millionth time, we dont need more laws, we need to enforce the ones which worked quite well at least as far as Eisenhower, if no further!
I so love to watch Trump whipsaw PRyno on immigration legislation.
Unfortunately PRyno is an amnasty bot, never to be dissuaded from screwing the public.
Isnt it interesting how these amnesty types keep winding up in Congress, after running as real conservatives, strong on border protection, but it never fails, once theyre elected, they flip. Almost like this is a plan.
Trump has flushed many out. It’s now up to us to actually flush them along with the rest of the 0bama.
We do keep flushing them out, but only after weve elected them as they run under a false flag. They try, every time, to pass amnesty again. We lit up the switchboards like never before, and possibly since, when they tried under Bush Jr to pass it. After all that, theyve still never let up. They are very invested in getting amnasty passed and in destroying our borders and our sovereignty. Almost every single one of them ran as being strongly opposed to illegal immigration, only to turncoat once they got into Congress. In every election, without fail.
It’s amazing (to me) and totally sick.
We have not thrown them out of office for the betrayal.
Graham, McCain, Rubio, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Alexander, Corker, etc. keep being voted back in. They will keep trying for amnesty until thrown from office, Graham has said just that repeatedly.
Problem:
—Can’t win without promising the voters what they want
—Wealthy backers want the opposite of what the voters want
—Can’t win without wealthy backers
Solution: work for the wealthy backers, lie to the public.
Suicidal alternative: work for the public, lie to the wealthy backers
Realistic alternative: be a billionaire, back yourself
We definitely need that—AND to stop chain migration, the diversity lottery, etc....
True. And when we voted against senile Cochran in MS, and for Chris McDaniel in the R primary, the Republican Party actually went so far as to openly bribe black Democrats to vote in the run-off for Cochran, to defeat McDaniel. Chris McDaniel had to be the real thing, because the Republican Party went all out to defeat him, in favor of a senile old coot in his dotage, but amenable to voting the party (amnesty) line.
Unfortunately the America First Trumps are few and far between.
Thats true. With the growth of this nation and politics as a career, politics have become, probably inevitably, corrupt.
It might be easier to list the few Senators of at least occasional use to America.
Rubio at the bottom as only rarely useful compared to the rest of the seriesly loosers..
oh hogwash. Trump didn’t ‘kill’ anything. The House couldn’t pass the wanted bill, and shelved the ‘compromise bill’ which had even less support.
There is psychology in what he said. 1) midterms are coming and the base is engaged and watching, and 2) a public kick in the butt - Did your Dad or Mom or brother ever say to you, stop wasting your time it will never work? And that made you work even harder to prove them wrong?
Anytime the Bush League Republican gets beat in the primary the GOP/RNC/NRSC/NRCC will kneecap the GOP candidate and help the Democrat win.
They have done it repeatedly.
They’re doing it again this time in Virginia.
That's the litmus test for 'Critters going forward.
There are just FOUR Senators that side with the citizens and the rule of law.
Cotton, Cruz, Grassley and Perdue.
