TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - The Honduran toddler pictured sobbing in a pink jacket before U.S. President Donald Trump on an upcoming cover of Time magazine was not separated from her mother at the U.S. border, according to a man who says he is the girl's father.
The powerful original photograph, taken at the scene of a border detention by Getty Images photographer John Moore, became one of the iconic images in the flurry of media coverage about the separation of families by the Trump administration.
Dozens of newspapers and magazines around the globe published the picture, swelling the tide of outrage that pushed Trump to back down Wednesday and say families would no longer be separated.

Valera said the little girl and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, have been detained together in the Texas border town of McAllen, where Sanchez has applied for asylum, and they were not separated after being detained near the border.
Honduran deputy foreign minister Nelly Jerez confirmed Valera's version of events.

The photo was used on a Facebook fundraiser that drew more than $17 million dollars in donations from close to half a million people for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal defense services to immigrants and refugees.

Sanchez and her daughter had left Puerto Cortes, a major Honduran port north of the capital city, Tegucigalpa, without telling Valera or the couple's three other children, he said.
He said he imagined that Sanchez left with the little girl for the United States, where she has family, in search of better economic opportunities.
"If they are deported, that is OK as long as they do not leave the child without her mother," Valera said. "I am waiting to see what happens with them."

Seems like fraud.
But they can say they presented the photo in good faith, given the fake reporting.
The mother left husband and 3 other children and took off for the USA. Obviously not eligible for asylum since hubby said he was looking for economic opportunities.
My granddaughter had a crying fit cuz we couldn't live in the library. Age 2 or 3....she went dead weight on the library stoop....

The Breitbart article says it is up to $18 million now. Soft-headed liberals will believe anything that supports their twisted notions. And throw money at it? I hope some media company steals the donor list because I have a bridge to sell these wingnuts.
The MSM that used that photo and the dishonest US Congress critters who used it will never admit their error. Liberal propaganda at it's finest raised $18 million for the lawyers and legal aids who will fight honest ICE agents and prosecutors to keep those so called "asylum seekers" in America.
Lying by mouth or by print in a manner that damages the reputation of a party regardless of malice or intent is a tort. Entire books are written about it, and remedies are codified in various parts of U.S. law. That said, perhaps it’s time to revisit and scrutinize the precise boundaries between “free speech/press” and tortious and actionable libel/slander by the media. Candidate Trump touched on this but the usual suspects said he’d be tampering with the ‘sanctity’ of the press. I think such a reexamination is worth looking into.
In other words, people attacked by the fake photo and related story can sue the crap out of TIME and the fake GoFundMe operation and its recipients.
Where I come from it is called both “Fraud” and “Lack of Due Diligence” to verify the photo before it was used for both the cover and fundraising.

It’s a picture of a healthy, well fed looking young toddler in an adorable matching brand new outfit.
