Put your car on cruise control, take your feet away from the pedals, then try to avoid a sudden accident.

First impulse might be to steer to avoid the accident but without a foot on the brake pedal, that adjustment of the wheel will be volatile.

Granted the driver’s feet are in the well of the driver’s side, but they still have to get back in position.

Now with a driverless car, your hands aren’t on the wheel and your attention may be more distracted or at least your awareness of the situation may not be 100%.

But the companies claim that it’s the driver’s fault.

Sort of like how it’s illegal to hit Houston Metro’s train. They can hit pedestrians, cars that have to co-exist with the rail (some turn lanes are on the rail) etc. Never their fault. Metro buses hit pedestrians (with right of way) but the law never made it illegal to hit the buses.

You ride on the back of a rain train, comrade. You don’t need to personally take your people mover on a highway. Big State will move it there for you.

Just wait until they start restricting where it will take you. Too many people at the mall, trip request denied. Vacation too far away, trip request denied. Election day and a registered republican, trip request denied. You will only be allowed to go where the programmers allow you to go. Your movements can easily be restricted with a download.

I will never understand why people would ever want to give up their freedom for a gadget.

From the story:
The driver of the Waymo vehicle told Mesa police that the car was not in autonomous mode at the time of Saturday night's crash.

Witnesses say another car failed to stop for a red light and crashed into the Waymo vehicle as it was turning left.

The car then struck three other vehicles.
The crash had nothing to do with self-driving cars other then the self-driving car (not in autonomous mode) was the victim (as were three other normal cars).

And would they have driving skills to take over if they don’t actually drive on a routine basis?

No. And even if they did, they wouldn't be able to make the mental switch from "passenger" to "driver" fast enough to matter.

Self-driving cars won’t be discontinued, no matter the casualties.
The end game is to end automobile ownership and the personal control over the vehicles’ paths and destinations.
When fully implemented, people will only be able to go where they are “allowed.”

Yes. And as I recall from away back, they sold a plastic shotgun-like toy that fired ping-pong balls when you pumped it. My little brother had one.

This one is just “dog bites man”, but another way to title it: Four human driven cars involved in five car crash.”

I wonder how many accidents will happen before self-driving cars are discontinued.

I can see the headline from the early 1900’s:

“How many more men must die in these horrible aeroplane crashes before this folly is abandoned?”

They’ll get better. Waymo better. :)

I just keep thinking of Whammo from my youth. Didn’t they sell the Frisbee among other toys?

What a great name for a self driving car:

The WHAMMO!

I saw that a while back.

I’ll bet they make better decisions than humans.

It does touch on lone of the themes from the movie, “I Robot”, though.

And once they become safer than human driven cars, and roads that are “self driven cars only” can be created for much faster and safer trips, the writing will be on the wall.

I love driving. I’ve driven a manual six speed Scion FR-S over 150,000 miles on my daily 150 mile commute on the twisty and smooth back roads of KY and never get tired of it, though I’ve been through seven sets of tires, most of them Michelin PSS’s.

But the age of massive use of human driven cars is clearly in its sunset. Driving a car in most cities, especially on your commute, has become a horrendous endeavor. Self driving would be welcomed by most people. It would also almost certainly be a faster commute.

But it may take at least another couple of generation to completely eliminate the human driven car.

And huge parts of American will no longer be accessible to the ordinary American, ‘cuz the cars won’t take them there.
In cities, though, it might make sense.

Why didn’t you note that the Waymo car in no way caused the accident?
