The reality is that prior to the Mexican War, there were almost no Hispanics in what is now Utah. The Ute were only a little less aggressive than the Comanche. The early Mormon settlers managed to make peace with them more by conversion and sharing their meager resources with them than the Texan way of dealing with the Comanche.

In fact, the Mexican government was more than OK with inviting the Mormons to settle in what was then Utah because they thought they had a docile industrious immigrant and would get a different result than when they invited Americans to settle in Texas.
