"GOP lawmaker Mark Sanford (S.C.) said the unyielding supporting Republicans are giving President Trump is a "cancerous growth" on the party.
Sanford made the comments in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine two days after his defeat in Tuesday's South Carolina primary race. The outgoing congressman addressed public perception that he wasn't loyal enough to Trump and how it helped lead to this week's loss.
"It is a cancerous growth," Sanford said. "The basis on which people's frustrations have been built is real and understandable in the way that at times Washington doesn't work for them or their families and those they love."
Sanford, a frequent Trump critic, continued that the idea that Republican lawmakers must align closely with the president is "metastasizing."
"And I think that again that which gave rise to the Trump phenomenon needs to be acknowledged as real and valid. I think the metastasization component is the way in which at times the president has pandered in his answers suggesting that there's an easy cure."
Sanford, who had served in the House since 2013, lost the GOP nomination to South Carolina state Rep. Katie Arrington, a vocal supporter of the president. Arrington secured Trump's endorsement on primary day in a tweet in which the president also criticized Sanford.

HOW?
WHY??
BECAUSE YOU SAY SO???
I am really getting sick of these RINO’s - YOU LOST SHUT UP
Hey Mark, just go hike the Appalachian Trail and STFU.
I’d settle for 3 years.....................
People like Sanford have been the problem with the Republican Party since 1948. Taft wing. General Bullmoose.
Nothing and nobody is more irrelevant than a loser!
He still can’t SHUT his TDS infected mouth.
Nothing and nobody is more irrelevant than a loser!
All of a sudden, party unification has become a bad thing.
They use to love to say the Republicans were fractured.
Now it’s becoming a real force from which Sandford has removed himself.
Well... yeah. It's because you and your GOP-E pals have been screwing them.
Now that the primary is over, and he lost, he can show ALL sides of his evil.
...... Now he IS doing it and fulfilling his promises. He is doing things that no politician was able to deliver before.
Something happened to Sanford.
He was one of the Class of ‘94 freshmen who came in with fire in their eyes. They wanted to fix everything - now. He voted very fiscally conservatively in his first time in the House. As Governor of South Carolina, he ran what I thought was a fiscally tight ship.
But somewhere along the way, things went awry and I’m not just talking about the marital infidelity thing. He got weird. I was surprised when he won the special election for his old House seat. I thought “Well, maybe he’s settled down now”.
But by press accounts, he hadn’t. He decided to pick a fight with Trump - in a district that’s been supportive of the President. He continued to have family issues with his ex-wife. And by recent accounts, he didn’t take the primary challenge very seriously until it was too late.
I’d like to think that politically he’s toast - but with a guy like this, you never know. In about 5 years from now, I can see him running for Congress again or even state representative.
Sanford is not only a globalist stooge, but one who can not control his peckerwood.
Take a hike Sanford.
He cheated on his wife with that Argie Floozie, that’s what happened.
Good riddance to this POS!
Sanford disappointed he is out of the running to be the next Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
