Jeez, Kay ... that’s what you get paid for!
No kidding...listening to the Euros bitch and moan is the primary job duty.
If I hadn't forgotten over 90% of my German over the past 35+ years, I'd volunteer my services. In the months leading up to the 1980 election, I got a bellyful from my neighbors while dining at the local gasthaus. They were convinced that Reagan would start WWIII.
At the ripe old age of 26, I engaged them in discussion, using my education and knowledge of world & military history, American civics and history, and other topics. I advocated for the election of Ronald Reagan, trying to convince them that a stronger America was better for the entire world, and Germany in particular.
I had been in country over 3 1/2 years, and had lived in that town for over 3...my German was damn good back then, enough to carry these discussions entirely in German. We went back and forth, but they came around to agree with me on Inauguration Day, when Iran released the hostages.
On my next visit (and until I returned to the States six months later), I was invited to sit at the stammtisch, a table reserved for family and close friends of the family. It's an honor I cherish to this day.
