Attorney general under Reagan, Bush urges GOP to defend Mueller

A former U.S. attorney general under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush is calling on members of Congress – Republicans included – to safeguard the special counsel investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election.

In an op-ed published by The Washington Post on Saturday, Dick Thornburgh expressed concern about what he called "unfair attacks on the Justice Department" perpetrated by some lawmakers and the White House.

He also voiced confidence for special counsel Robert Mueller, who is carrying out the criminal investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, praising him as "serious but not sensational and loyal to the rule of law."

"Elected officials must stress unambiguously their support of the role of the special counsel and guard his right to pursue this investigation in a fair and impartial manner," Thornburgh wrote.

"Through whatever means members of Congress deem appropriate, they must defend the rule of law and the integrity of the special counsel’s mission."

Without commenting on his reasons it seems Thornburgh is confuding Special Counsel with the independent counsel of his time. Mueller is not independent. He is a creature of DoJ and could be dismissed at any time.

did this same asshat demand that the Starr investigation be protected from the media and White House onslaught? I’m betting he was as quiet as a church mouse.

I think Thornburgh lost a senate election to a total nonentity who had no money; the guy hired Carville, it was his first big client candidate but couldn’t pay him. The guy won, in a surprise victory over this Bush-boob.

Dick didn’t care that Ted Kennedy colluded with the KGB and US media to try to defeat Reagan in 1984.

Dick didn’t care that Bill Clinton and Al Gore personally colluded with China during rhe 1996 election.

What a Dick.

Did Dick Thornburgh explain exactly what he means by "unfair attacks on the Justice Department?"

Many people have been following Mueller's special counsel, and have a great deal of knowledge. What is unfair and why is Dick Thornburgh calling it such?

Is he just taking potshots typical of GOPe, or is there substance in his concerns?

We are headed to a very bleak precedent in our future from the whole Obama/Clinton/Soros Cabal, Mueller which hunt, media propaganda, vote fraud and illegal immigration. Is Trump a speed bump or will we stop this?

Mueller’s investigation is NOT a criminal investigation! How many times is the lib media going to perpetuate this. Mueller’s investigation is an Intelligence invest.— extended from a prior existing investigation.

All the more reason why it should be shut down— is the premise for its very existence today is seriously fake/flawed.

Hey Dick,
When the DOJ starts being transparent and quits withholding documents then talk to us about unfair attacks. The people deserve a moral and ethical DOJ who are accountable to the law.

Mule has no integrity and Dick just proved that he doesn’t have any either. Mule is a political hack who is on a witch hunt.

"They are preparing to do the same to the next democrat President."

Bwahahaha! Who is? A few weeks of the media pressure how this country can't withstand a repeat and how it would be "extremely dangerous to our democracy" and the Pubbies would fold like wet blankets.
