That’s just pathetic - his father was a Hall-of-Fame tight end for Don Coryell’s San Diego Chargers, so Winslow grew up wealthy and well-educated. He himself played in the NFL and should have come away with a decent amount to last him the rest of his life. Crime isn’t about poverty, it’s about a lack of character.

and poverty is not about lack of money

My family qualified for subsidized school lunches. We didn’t take them, our packed lunches were far better and Dad said they were for poor people not us.

I remember former Dallas Cowboys Star and world’s fastest human, Bob Hayes was arrested for armed robbery in Jacksonville after his playing days were over.

What did he do with all his earnings? I doubt he invested it wisely.

Something like 70% of all former NFL players are bankrupt within 10 years. All the bottle service and lap dances for your posse and lease payments for Ferraris add up.

Yep, sad they don’t get good financial advice. When I see what even journeyman players earn, I think how with that kind of money, I would have no financial problems .

Of course I’m looking at it from a middle class view of managing the family money. It’s behind my comprehension to have a life where you are in strip clubs and have Ferrari cars and all that.

.... became one of NFL’s best tight ends during his time in the league.

No. He didn’t.

Didn’t he ruin his career by doing wheelies on a motorcycle and injuring himself?

Glad my Ohio State Buckeyes beat the U for the national championship in 2003.

Growing up a Michigan fan, I hated the Buckeyes with a passion, but I was so happy they won that game.

“If the current crop of NFL players didn’t have Professional Football, they would turn to crime. This is just one example. “

Yeah, the guy was “just returning to his roots.” Now he can be “a tight end” for some bubba in the slammer.

Yeah, if it wasn’t for black “athletes,” West Coast Customs and Unique Rides TV shows would be off the air.

Exactly what I was thinking! Kellen Winslow, once thought to be a pretty stand-up guy and maybe the best tight end in football at the time. Seems to have fallen rather far...

He probably made more money during his nfl career of a few years than most of us earn in our lifetime...none of us can escape our life choices....

“Yep, sad they don’t get good financial advice. When I see what even journeyman players earn, I think how with that kind of money, I would have no financial problems.”

Back in the old days players would use playoff and championship bonuses to invest for the future.
They would invest in real estate or buy franchises, McDonalds was the big buy back then.
Fatso Donavan used his money to buy a liquor store. He claimed that little liquor store put his kids through college and allowed him a nicer retirement.

Todays millionaire players don’t think past the moment.
The money is rolling in, spend it.

He will be taking something else for his coming out party in the slammer.

When Bob Hayes played, players didn’t make much at all, not much more than a guy with a decent job would make. A few made big bucks, but not many. Free agency was very limited. Some made money on endorsements, but not many blacks got endorsement deals, other than OJ. So, Bob may have come out of football with no savings or very little, and he was used to living an upper middle class lifestyle. Players from that era went into insurance and things like that.
