Could Chrysler Be Killed This Friday?

Swirling rumors suggest that one of America's oldest remaining automakers could be on the chopping block.

Sergio Marchionne will hold an investor's meeting in Italy on Friday, June 1, in Balocco, Italy, where the CEO will possibly kill one the corporation's most historic brands. FCA specialist Larry P. Vellequette of Automotive News reports that "a source told a European colleague" that Marchionne would declare the end of the Chrysler brand in the speech to investors.

In addition, Marchionne could detail plans to pull Fiat out of the United States and China, according to Automotive News. The brand would re-focus on building vehicles for Europe, Brazil, and emerging markets.

FCA's big strategic pivot would free up money to invest even more into Jeep, which is already the corporation's most profitable division. Among the new products reportedly on the way, there would be an even smaller SUV below the Renegade and the luxurious Grand Wagoneer for challenging the upper end of the segment.

With all due respect, there is a general lack of knowledge here about Jeeps. folks buy them, modify them and then beat the shit out of them. The modifications usually involve lifts and huge tires. All this translates into poor mileage and additional repairs.

Well, why do folks do it? Well, it's a cult thing for sure.

I have a Rubicon - that's top of the line for those not in the know. I modified the grill and put a stubby antennae on it: my statement... that's it. My gas mileage is the same as a previous truck I owned. I have had it two years with not a single issue... a cream puff, as it were.

I've taken it out to the mountains where trucks can't go: Locking front/rear axles (Dana 44), electronic sway bar disconnect, rear stabilizer bar, rock rails, skid plates, electronic roll mitigation and trailer sway damping... I could go on and on. Hence the price... I paid 36k for mine.

I take off the 'freedom panels' and go cruisin'... I love it.

To each his own. Buy your needs. Other rides go faster. My ride goes anywhere and it will pull yours out of a ditch.

The K car for its time was an
inexpensive, reliable vehicle.
Blew a head gasket after 100,000,
had it repaired, and drove it
another 150,000. Nothing else
required other than regular
maintenance. It was still running
when we gave it to a teenager to drive to school.
Paint and interior still looked
near new. The wife loved it.

The 300 has been dropped. Too bad it’s a nice car. That leaves only the Pacifica which will probably get re-badged because they own the mini van space and the Pacifica is a vey nice vehicle for a family if you can afford it.
CAFE is probably at the heart of this. I am convinced it’s the reason Ford abandoned the car market. Ford never dreamed Trump would win and relax the standards and it was too late to change the plans

Engine light usually means nothing more than emissions (The Environment(TM)) these days. EGR valve, etc. You can afford to ignore it unless you must go through Enviro(TM) inspections.

They were good cars, though. We finally gave up my husband’s (GRAND Cherokee, as he will correct you) last year for a new GMC after 18 years.

Bingo.

I can never understand why gov bureaucrats haven’t upped the requirements for “trucks”?

Seems stupid after all these years attacking “cars” while “trucks” (ha ha) get off rather free.

I read that the PT Cruiser was cancelled because some bigwig in the company did not like it. With stupid business decisions like that, it is no wonder the company is failing.

I have been looking at cars the last few days. The Chevy dealer has lots of different models, as does the Ford dealer. But Chrysler has just two models. When I saw that, my first thought was that Chrysler is on its way out. I think I’ll just have my PT Cruiser repainted and keep it a while longer.

Too late, maybe. Lee Iacocca was gunned down during a failed assassination attempt on the life of Adrian Veidt in 1985.

That was just before the attack that killed millions of people around the world and brought about peace between the United States and the Soviet Union.

So, one person.

Even if enough people wanted it and would actually pay money for it, it could never be sold because of crash, fuel economy, rollover and pedestrian safety regs and performance. That design can’t meet 1980s regs let alone modern ones.

Mercedes owned Jeep for a few years.
There vision was to extend the jeep brand to travel, vacations, clothing, etc.

Then they got cold feet...

They should have brought back Ricardo Montalban

Yes, they should have. If he could sell those cars, he could sell anything. (Apologies to Mouton and his 16 years/250K miles on one of them. That was the outlier of outliers.)

I looked at his bio on Wikipedia - married at age 24, stayed married until the appropriate parting time 63 years later. How rare is that in Hollywood?

That truck was about as macho a TV vehicle could be.

I’d prefer a shortbed though.

Yup.
Even though Desoto quit in ‘60, Chrysler was branding Dodges with the Desoto name in Mexico into the mid-1960s.

I have a 2003 Sebring with styling that makes current cars look like scarab beetles. I still get compliments on it.

It was the LH platform that made them money. Hence the billions Mercedes stole in the “merger”
