The Maryland Flooding Is a Warning
Slate Magazine ^ | May 29, 2018 | By HENRY GRABAR

Climate change is hitting America as rain, and we’re making it worse.

Two years ago, Ellicott City, Maryland, was hit by a debilitating flash flood that turned the town’s historic Main Street into a raging muddy river. Scientists said the July 2016 rainstorm was a once-in-a-thousand-year event.

But on Sunday it happened again: 7 to 9 inches of rain fell in the area, 10 miles west of Baltimore, and another torrent swept cars and trees through town.

It’s a reminder that heavy rain, rather than rising seas, may be the earliest severe consequence of climate change. We’ve prepared for it in the worst way possible.

But climate change isn’t the only reason these disasters aren’t quite natural. Unchecked sprawl has built a concrete funnel around Ellicott City. “All this natural vegetation that would act as sponges is being replaced by concrete and impervious surfaces,” explains Stephen Strader, a professor at Villanova who studies environmental risk.

As we are advancing further into the Grand Solar Minimum (sun is ready to hibernate) I have a feeling we will be seeing more of the same and not just in Ellicott City, along with earthquakes etc. You may want to watch John L. Casey discussing The Grand Solar Minimum earthquakes & more GSM exclusive on YouTube.

“Unchecked sprawl” and living in areas that flood. This could be any town USA or Bangladesh. These morons use every story and add “climate” to it. They have no idea how foolish they sound.

Nowhere close. That’s how off the scale a PMF is.

Blue city, Blue city problems. Here is an idea. Fix the problems and stop blaming something that cannot defend itself.

No, this is not due to climate change. But this town doesn't get your typical floods, as in the water is rising from the river and the fire department is wading through waist high water towing senior citizens and their little yapping dogs in a jon boat. These "floods" are like the big guy, himself, is sitting at the top of the hill with a giant fire hose. The main street is at such a steep grade and a nice little bend half-way down, that, at it's peak, you get what would probably rate as a Class 4 or 5 whitewater run.

This time, they lost the original county courthouse (built in 1840). But how these buildings have lasted this long is somewhat surprising.

Is there some super secret way to stop “Climate Change”?

Is there some magic machine that we got from reverse engineering Alien Technology?

They can complain all they want, but it only proves that their only interest is controlling the Population to satisfy their “progressive” view that People are helpless Morons.

Actually, the second statement proves the first statement is wrong, and if the LONG geographic and natural history of Maryland is studied more, researches will likely find cycles of long spans of few such events, and cycles of bursts of multiple such events not far from each other, repeated and repeated over LONG history.

The whole Southeast, and most of the east coast are considered humid subtropical climates in the Köppen climate classification. Rain and a lot of it is normal this time of year. From Wikipedia's Köppen article :
These climates usually occur on the eastern coasts and eastern sides of continents, usually in the high 20s and 30s latitudes. Unlike the dry summer Mediterranean climates, humid subtropical climates have a warm and wet flow from the tropics that creates warm and moist conditions in the summer months. As such, summer (not winter as is the case in Mediterranean climates) is often the wettest season.

The flow out of the subtropical highs and the summer monsoon creates a southerly flow from the tropics that brings warm and moist air to the lower east sides of continents. This flow is often what brings the frequent but short-lived summer thundershowers so typical of the more southerly subtropical climates like the far southern United States, southern China and Japan

This is the rainy season for most of the eastern United States. Nothing new. Nothing is "changing".

The biggest contributor to flooding is urbanization of formally rural areas. When everything becomes a parking lot, the rain runoff has a super hightway straight into the creeks and rivers. The climate is the same, but the path to the creek has changed.

What really ticks me off about this is that they’re still able to buy flood insurance. The Feds decided not to sell this to several towns along the Missouri-Mississippi flood plains, and as a consequence a few towns had to be moved to nearby bluffs, which was better all around. There’s no reason taxpayers should be on the hook for costs incurred by people foolish enough to build on sites of repeated flooding.

Ellicott city (founded in 1772) flooded in 1868, 1901, 1917, 1923, 1942 and 1952, 1972, 2011, 2016, and again in 2018. Climate change seems pretty consistent, when it comes to their flooding.

Build a city in a flood prone area and blame “climate change” for its most recent flood. You can’t fix stupid.

Yeah, they should have had methane filters on those sport utility horses.

Here is a link to WCBM’s morning show with Sean Casey and Frank Luber:

http://www.wcbm.com/sean-and-frank-bruce-elliott-show-podcasts/

If you go to 2:40-2:45, they are discussing the problems with Ellicott City. Sean rec’d an email from someone related to a couple of dams which have been opened, he didn’t know their names, but wondered if this is a contributing factor to the recent flooding and the one in ‘16. He mentioned the Patapsco River and Liberty Lake in the area.
