When Gene Roddenberry proved incapable of running a TV show, Desilu brought in veteran writer and sometimes produce Gene Coon from the “Wild, Wild West”. Pretty much all of TOS episodes that people love were produced by Gene Coon.

Star Trek was canceled shortly after Coon left the show in the second season and reluctantly renewed for the abysmal third season.

The First season of TNG is the purest vision of Roddenberry's vision, after which; he was again removed from the day to day running of the show by Rick Berman.
