One of my favorite patriotic songs is Stuart Hamblen's "Old Glory."

Today, Antifa, Black Lives Matter, Code Pink and the NFL Players' Association may try to tear down Old Glory, but they will find out, as did the Communists of Stuart Hamblen's day, that there are plenty of us around who "still love our liberty" and "with our lives, will guarantee to keep her proudly in the breeze."

SHOW BOAT: “MAKE BELIEVE”

This video is from a 1990 PBS broadcast. Jerry Hadley’s premature death in 2007 was a blow to the operatic community, and here we see him with “Flicka” von Stade in a faithful concert adaptation of the show. This is a glorious performance.

Several years ago, I looked for “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” in the hymnal of the United Methodist Church only to find that it has been omitted from the latest edition.

When this record came out, "red," when used in political science, had a different connotation than it does today.

Hard to believe, but this is Tony from 2015. It’s a laid back piano bar arrangement from a man who appears to be ageless.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

SHOW BOAT: “OL’ MAN RIVER”

Imagine a song with the following lyrics:

Niggers all work on de Mississippi,

Niggers all work while de white folks play...

The N-word was a part of American discourse, North and South, before and after the Civil War. Minstrel shows with black performers, or white performers in black-face, were a staple of entertainment. It was ragtime in the final years of the 19th Century that finally killed off the minstrel show.

In 1927, when “Show Boat” was first produced, few thought about the N-word in normal discourse. That changed with the New Deal. The alteration in social consciousness began with the 1936 Universal film version of the musical where the offensive word was replaced by “darkies.” In 1938 Paul Robeson changed that word and others in the song in an attempt to redefine Joe’s character and give him more dignity.

The issue remains controversial today as can be seen when people try to ban Huckleberry Finn from school libraries. Today the N-word is commonplace in the black community and especially among rappers, but God help the non-black who utters that word!

This remains Kern’s best known song. This is what it sounded like in the 1936 movie musical.

Robeson would later become a committed communist.

SHOW BOAT: “OL’ MAN RIVER”

It comes across rather differently in the 1951 MGM version. Warfield’s treatment is pure opera.
