Ive often said that at least 20 to 25% of my time as a government engineer was wasted. Ive taken ethics training yearly for 20 years. Add to that hearing conservation, records training, Opsec training, human trafficking training, ergonomics training, and a bunch of others I cant recall. Some are easy, some have tests that waste more time some are videos I can leave on go get a cup of coffee as they drone on and on. More than once Ive had to take some of them over again cause of computer hiccups. On top of my PE continuing education I have to complete 80 hours of continuous learning due to some stupid Federal rule. Ive gotten ugh er inventive over time about what is training and my boss has no incentive to turn down anything I submit. I could write more about the stupidity of work related assignments but Ill keep it short. Im in the military so there is an endless parade of new colonels and captains (Ive worked for the AF and Navy) cycling through every 2 years or less with their own agenda trying to get noticed for promotion. So we have new systems, programs, ideas etc we learn employ and sometimes drop as they leave. I could go on but suddenly want a beer.
......Right to Know (hazardous materials) training, sexual harassment training, Fire Safety training, Workplace Violence training, Incident Response (Active Shooter) training, Cyber Security training, Internal Controls training, and so on.
Likewise for me (State engineer), these are all required annually by law and none of them count as continuing education credit for an engineering license.
I rarely go in the field, back when I did there were annual hearing checkups and a bunch more training.
They have made most of them into interactive web modules, so you can do them when your not very busy. Between training and continuing ed I need to complete about 21-22 webinars per year.
Ill admit, sometimes I just let webinars run with the volume muted and go about my regular work.
