No, the burglars were needlessly trying to find electoral dirt on McGovern. Nixon was going to whip him without this un-ordered stunt.
The burglars have never been confirmed to have stolen the “hooker” book. But.. the democrats used the potential that it was in evidence to get Dean to “flip” on Nixon and spill a bunch of protected info that had to do with the cover up for the crimes committed by people not authorized or even known to be doing the burglary, but whom Nixon protected by covering it up. What he should have done was fired all of them, and refer them to the FBI for prosecution. He still would have won the election and held his office— the democrats would have had.... zip without the leakes.
Don’t forget that the so-named Deep Throat source for the WaPo writers was Mark Felt— the Associate Director of the FBI, who was leaking certain info to the WaPo, and increased his leaking once he was not named as Director of the FBI and William Ruckelshaus was. It was John Dean who, early on, protected Felt from being outed as a leaker, since Dean was trusted by Nixon. And Dean did all this so the drip drip would continue, because the democrats told him a potentially false ‘setup’ that Maureen Dean’s photo and “bio” was still in the book. Such was the Deep State and the Swamp of that day.
