China is not a crap-hole. It is actually a very modern country. There is actually more entrepreneurial spirit there than in the USA.

But the Communist Party still has total control.

“I do not think China is the place to grow a big religious culture, at least not a religion like Christianity.”

That’s what the Chinese communists say and try to impose to the society but there is no good reason to think they succeed.
The Chinese are profoundly superstitious, much more than say their neighbours like the Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans... They pray a lot and go to budhist temples a lot so they are in essence very religious. Generations of Chinese in other political environments (Chinese diaspora, Chinese in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore) have not changed that. It’s a cultural trait, like Chinese mercantilism, Chinese food... you don’t easily erase that by government fiat.

Then live there. Don’t forget your little red book from chairman Mao kept right next to your heart.

Agreed. Not in our free society. But China ain’t a free society. And the populations of places like China and India overburdens the resources.

Simon disproved that a long time ago. Red China itself has hotten richer as the population increased from 600,000,000 to over a billion. Same with India. Often it is the rural areas that are poor. Densely populated areas like South Korea, Netherlands and Hong Kong prosper. Africa is filled with areas that are poor and with a low population. Europe will be overrun with Moslems because they didn’t have children, and it is too late to start now.

The irony of the one child policy and everyone wanting a son is this - short term it satisfies the family’s ego - but long term, the chances of a grandchild is remote with the lopsided boys to girls ratio. Parents with a daughter ought to be able to levy a high dowry price for her hand in marriage and her ‘eggs’. HaHa! Yes, seriously.

“The problem is, after years of propaganda against having more then one child it is ingrained in their psychic.”

So true.
Many years ago I worked with a Chinese woman. She spoke little English but we could figure it out.
Even though she had come to the US with her educated husband she couldn’t shake the One Child policy.
Their son was born here and she was adamant that she wasn’t having any more children. Only One.
