The new administrator of nasa held a town hall Thursday at the agencys headquarters in Washington, D.C. Jim Bridenstine is about four weeks into the job, and his path here was mired in controversy. After a few opening remarks, he started taking some questions. The first was about what Bridenstine thinks makes him qualified to be the head of nasa. The second was, as the moderator put it, one more easy onebecause its about climate change.
Bridenstine laughed. So did many in the room. It was an uncomfortable question. Bridenstine, as a Republican in Congress, has a record of denying that humans are responsible for causing climate change. For Democrats and liberals, Bridenstines view on this and other issuesparticularly on same-sex marriage and transgender rightsmade him a contentious pick to lead nasa, an agency that supports climate-change research and very publicly agrees with the majority of climate scientists who say that humans are the primary cause of the planets rising temperatures.
As far as my position on climate change and how its evolved, Ill be very open, Bridenstine replied. He described, as he has done multiple times before, his longstanding interest in funding weather-forecasting programs, particularly for tornadoes, which threaten people in Oklahoma, Bridenstines home state, each year. Then he got to what his critics wanted to hear.
I dont deny that consensus that the climate is changing, he said. In fact, I fully believe and know that the climate is changing. I also know that we humans beings are contributing to it in a major way. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Were putting it into the atmosphere in volumes that we havent seen, and that greenhouse gas is warming the planet. That is absolutely happening, and we are responsible for it.

Of COURSE its changing, dumbass...its soon going to be SUMMER, and we just came out of WINTER!
If it wasn’t for climate change, Chicago would still be under a mile of ice.
IS THAT OUR FAULT, TOO?
Climate changes, also. That's why we have ice ages and warm ages. No argument there.
The models that predicted temperature changes failed spectacularly. As Physicist Richard Feynman said, simply, "If it disagrees with experiment, its wrong."
It, being the climate models' predicted temperatures. The experiment is comparing these to the actual temperature. The actual temperatures disagree with the model, therefore the models are wrong.
THEN you report this. The reporting has been very weak. Then you devise another temperature model and compare it to upcoming temperatures. Are there any new models out there that they will be testing? They need to agree with actual temperatures that occurred since the first models were made and they need to agree with temperatures that will be happening from now.
Also, you can't cheat by lowering or raising temperatures so they match your model. Does Mr. Bridenstine understand all of this above?
He is a politician who has no formal background in science or engineering. Such a person can be dazzled by a 'scientist' WITH that background since Bridenstine has no good arguments to refute the 'scientist.' He had better have some good advisors or he will be turned by the warmers even more than he has been so far.
Sigh.
Trump should be working this out before appointing these people. Why in the world are they not given a rundown of Trump’s platform? If they disagree - no job!
Here in Ohio the climate can change every hour. It’s been going on as long as I can remember.
The climate has always changed.
We are just along for the ride.
Along with the advisor who, in failing to thoroughly check out the nominee, directly failed in his/her job. Out the door, immediately.
Swamp creatures are of a collective mind, kind of like the Borg ...
I also believe in climate change. I just believe the fossil fuels story is tunnel vision and who’s to say it isn’t. I also believe there statistics have been compromised by urban sprawl. Inspections of the official test facilities a Jacobsen surrounded by subdivisions making it appear that change is happening faster. If millennial truly want to reverse it limit yourselves to 1 child.
Exactly.
It’s been getting warmer for roughly 200 years, as we thaw out from the LIA.
And for the most part the change is beneficial.
If we still had the climate of the 1700’s, no one would have heard of Norman Borlaug.
Well, so much for science. Youd hope the person running nasa would be a bit more grounded in science.
The climate is changing. It’s called the weather.
“(Scientists have found that volcanic eruptions also play a large role in these natural changes in climate, and they note that recent temperature changes dwarf any of these historic anomalies.)”
LOL. What a load of tripe. Google “Year Without a Summer”.
Or, read about this....
- Ash and SO2 aerosols (forming H2SO4 droplets) from the plinian eruption plume are ejected into the stratosphere where it circled and spread around the globe for 12 months.
- As a result, global temperatures sank by 0.5 degree C in 1992 because of the sunlight absorbing effect of the aerosols in the stratosphere.

The climate is always changing, you dope..!
The climate is a non-linear dynamic system. It has always changed, and it always will.

Well, he and Musk agree.
Wish the global warming cultusts would shut up and leave us alone.
“an agency that supports climate-change research”
That’s not what NASA was created to do. That’s not what NASA or Bridenstine should be spending any time on. That’s not what he should be blabbing his opinion on to the media.
It really comes down to how he defines “major”. The climate is of course changing and it always has and always will. Humans are contributing to it by burning carbon. But the real question is whether we’re peeing in the ocean or the kitchen sink. Seems more likely the ocean.
Another great pick by President Ivanka Kelly!
