A big “SO WHAT”? When was the last time you saw the mainstream media do any serious investigative reports on Soviet “disinformation” programs in the U.S., since, say, the 1980’s?
Waiting!!
If it weren’t for the pioneering work of Prof. Roy Godson and his team at Georgetown Un back in the 70’s/80’s, and that of Herb Romerstein and his team at the USIA/State Dept. and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence,
(and S. Steven Powell’s masterpiece “Covert Cadre: about the Soviet infested Institute for Policy Studies” (1987), nobody would know anything about Soviet Disinformation and other types of anti-American propaganda operations both in the US and abroad.
See: “”Soviet Covert Action: The Forgery Offensive”, House permanent Select Committee on Intelligence”, 96th Congress, 2nd Session, Feb. 6, 19, 1980 AND
“Soviet Active Measures”, hearings, Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, House of Representatives, 97t Congress, 2nd Session, 7/13-14/82.
The USIA also issued a series of similar reports in the 1980’s that are illustrated goldmines of Soviet disinformation operations.
Godson’s group put out a pioneering book on “Disinformation” as well as some smaller reports. Well worth reading.
Romerstein and Stanislav Levchenko, in their “The KGB Against the Main Enemy: How the Soviet Intelligence Service Operations Against the united States”, Lexington Books, D.C> Heath & Co., 1989, also delves into Soviet disinformation as far back as the 1930’s. Most interesting was the disinformationstatement of (later U.S. Senator) Alan Cranston of the Communist Party USA/NVKD infiltrated Office of War Information (OWI), about the Soviet assassination of Carlos Tresca, a former Italian communist who opposed them and the fascists. See pages 139-142.
There is so much more to read about real Soviet (now Russian) disinformation that I’m willing to bet the USA team never read 1% of the material available from the past.
While interesting, this article leaves me with the impression that less than 0.001 percent of Americans even read the “Facebook” materials or really gave a damn about them.
Looks like Moscow got another group of the American mainstream media into their “sucker” file. Fell for it Hook, Line and Sinker, they did.
