California couple charged with making assault weapons
The Sacramento Bee ^ | 05/11/18

A Southern California couple has been charged with illegally making and selling assault weapons from their home.

Bearl and Sarah Anne Leach of Moreno Valley were arrested this week after being charged with 70 felony counts, including manufacturing assault weapons and possessing high-capacity magazines.

Their scheduled Friday arraignment was continued and they're being held on $2 million bail each. It wasn't immediately clear whether the couple had an attorney.

Investigators say a tip led members of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and members of an FBI joint terrorism task force to search the couple's home.

Investigators say they found what appeared to be unregistered assault weapons that had been custom-designed for each buyer.

Why don’t they hold them on a 2 trillion dollar bond. They are obviously a danger to the entire country. Maybe consulting with firearm expert oberstormfurher hogg will give some insight into high cap mags and what they mean for the human race.

No mention of them being white supremacist NRA right wing republicans, so I will assume they are Antifa goons.

Over in the Great State of Georgia, the only way they’d get in trouble is if they failed to remit the sales tax.

Good Lord - my eyes about popped when I saw that too. That's up to the level of international terrorism or something. Time for attorneys to get busy with bail reduction hearings.

They look like drug trash. If they were right wing, some elite assassin team from FIB would have murdered them already, or let them shoot up some expendable target.

The search warrant was obtained after unspecified “threats”.

The charges listed are all victimless crimes.
I would be inclined to vote innocent as a jury member on their trial.

If these people started with 80% lowers I though it was a legal gun not needing registration even in California, but that is for personal use only. Maybe the law changed in 2018? They definitely broke the law building them for other people. 2 million dollar bail is a joke. This folks will be made an example out of.

It was only legal if you did not sell it. That was under Federal law as well, it needed to be engraved (with font size and depth requirements) with the manufacturers name and city. Now in California you can manufacture a rifle other than an assualt weapon but you must obtain a serial number from the California Department of Justice before doing so.

But the interesting thing is that they charged them with magazine possession. I quote from an article in the San Jose Mercury News about a SF 49ers player who was charged with possession of an assault weapon and domestic violence: "At the prosecution’s request, Superior Court Judge Nona Klippen dismissed a misdemeanor ammunition charge against Foster after authorities reportedly found a high-capacity magazine for a SIG Sauer 516 short-barreled rifle at his home. The law banning the magazine is currently blocked by a federal court injunction issued last year."

So there you have it. They both can't be right although I suspect the Santa Clara County DA is ignorant of the law and looking for a way to let the football player off the hook (which they have a reputation for doing so). The law in question banned magazine that were legally owned and grandfathered in after the first ban which I think happened in 2000 if not earlier. They were banned last year by Gavin Newsom's ballot proposition without compensation as required by the US Constitution and that was (rightfully) promptly put under injunction. Now in 2000 that football player was in grade school in Georgia so he couldn't have legally owned the magazine but if they give him a pass they should give these two one.

I am waiting for someone on this thread to state the wording of the second amendment so they we can then see these people magically released from the jail.

Perhaps one of those folks who are so adamant saying that “the second amendment is my carry permit” will state the magic words that will finally make the constitution have some kind of practical value.

They look like drug trash.

Maybe, but can't really tell by the pics. They are in meth territory, but don't yet have the look of meth addicts. They probably made weapons from 80% lowers in their garage and ended up selling some to an undercover cop/agent.

My dad received twelve high capacity magazines (40 rds) plus the .223 rounds to fill them, delivered to the front door by FedEx. In your face CA. Oh, and he got his Ruger 556 sent to a local FFL dealer and took it home.
