“an R&B group called The Time.”

Uh, one of Prince’s experimental toy acts which had a megahit he wrote called “Jungle Love”, never mind was in his movie Purple Rain.

The way they wrote that makes it seem like the reader wouldn’t know who they are. I’d say half of all Prince fans know of them.

I'm one of his fans. Prince was a prolific song-writer, making stars of numerous singers who sang his songs.

I have no problem with folks being a fan of his. For all the talk about his creativity, I am still looking for the first song he was responsible for that I actually care to listen to.

The only time I ever think of the guy is when the media becomes fascinated with him again, and they talk about him non-stop for weeks on end.

He wrote hit songs for Sinead O'Connor, Chaka Khan, Tom Jones, the Bangles and Tevin Campbell, Sheila E., Sheena Easton, Stevie Nicks, Patti LaBelle, Tevin Campbell, Martika, Alicia Keyes among others. Ever hear of them? Chaka Khan "I Feel For You". The Bangles "Manic Monday". Tom Jones "Kiss". Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares to U". Etc. Lots of top 100 hits by other singers were written by Prince.

Thanks for the mention roadcat.

I do like some of those songs, so there is a chance that if I knew more about all the songs he wrote for others, I might have a lot more appreciation of him.

I'm a former musician and follow music. Although I stopped playing in bands in my twenties, I have musician friends who still play in their sixties. There are quite a few singers who started out writing songs for others before cashing in on their song-writing talent by singing their own songs. I've gone to Neil Sedaka concerts right at stage-front, he too wrote many hit songs for others (hundreds). Others are Elton John, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Paula Abdul (mainly choreography but songs also), etc.. I rate Prince up there with the top artists for song-writing talent.

Thank for the mention. I was aware of the others, but never saw Prince in quite that light, so I learned something. I will admit, you don’t appear to be the only one in awe of his skills.

http://people.com/music/songs-prince-wrote-for-others/

I’m in awe of his skills because of having been a musician; I know my shortcomings. I’ve played in jazz bands since junior high, and rock bands in high school and later on. In my mid-twenties, I knew I couldn’t compare to others so I left the scene to concentrate on IT work. Back then I was playing with some guys who went on to some fame. The last band I was with, wasn’t making much money and broke up and reformed as Malo (Jorge Santana, etc.). Leo Pepe Rosales, our timbales performer, one day during practice asked me if I wanted to be a performer or something else. Because he was practicing 8 hours a day or more to perfect his skills, and was dedicated to music. It was then I decided to pursue IT and drop music. Do one thing, and do it well. I was just a so-so musician, but a good tech guy. He and some others I know went on to bigger things. One became a symphony conductor for a major city, another a top world-famous jazz trombonist, etc. But I also know a lot of guys who were so-so and continued playing. Very few are capable of performing great music, fewer at song-writing, and I’m in awe of those folks who do write songs. Sorry about rambling, getting old but reminiscing.

There’s a story—no doubt apocryphal—that someone asked Eric Clapton what it was like to be the best guitarist on earth. He replied, “I don’t know. You’d have to ask Prince.” Too great a line for it to be real.

The other night he was being praised, and they were talking about him not just playing a number of instruments, but mastering them.

That’s all I could add to your thoughts on this.
