I can believe he did not wet start the fire on the Forrestal: His exhaust was ;ointed the wrong direction - away from the Zuni-launching aircraft.
But.
McCain IS a very rare flyer: He is one of the few Cold War aces: He shot down, destroyed, crashed, ejected from or burned up five enemy (er, US Navy) planes.
