McCain says he regrets choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate
American Thinker ^ | 05/05/2018 | Thomas Lifson

The forthcoming final memoir from Senator John McCain, titled The Restless Wave, and a nearly two-hour-long HBO documentary on its way seem to be being used as an opportunity to settle some scores. Jonathan Martin of the New York Times has obtained copies of both books, and has spoken with the ailing senator at his ranch, where he seems to be spending his final days. This leaped out at me:

While he continues to defend Ms. Palin’s performance, Mr. McCain uses the documentary and the book to unburden himself about not selecting Mr. Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent, as his running mate.

He recalls that his advisers warned him that picking a vice-presidential candidate who caucused with Democrats and supported abortion rights would divide Republicans and doom his chances.

It is odd indeed to call it “sound advice” and to simultaneously wish he had disregarded it. Logically, this seems to mean that he wishes he had lost, while making a futile gesture towards bipartisanship, or maybe just avoiding contamination with the populism of Sarah Palin. It is an open secret that members of McCain’s campaign sought to sabotage Palin during the campaign, apparently preferring to lose rather than tolerate her views and her persona.

This odd, unsourced paragraph written by Martin offers a clue:

Yet many in Mr. McCain’s own party believe that, by selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, he bears at least a small measure of blame for unleashing the forces of grievance politics and nativism within the Republican Party.

I strongly suspect that McCain himself expressed these views to Martin, but asked not to be quoted.

Despite her later lack of popularity, there were huge numbers of conservatives who only voted for McLame because of Palin. They were voting for the bottom of the ticket. McLame and Romney were absolute disasters, both designed to insure a Democrat won. This is the game played by the Uniparty. They take turns. That was the game until the Democrats smelled blood in the water with Obama’s Reign of Terror, capped by his ultimate evil, Obamacare. They knew Hilary could finish off the nation in 8 more years, so they decided not to give a Republican a turn. I guess the GOP-e agreed, looking at the 2016 field. It was rancid. I didn’t want anybody for president. It was only after Trump won the nomination that I began to hear how conservative he sounded and he won me over. During the primary, I was hoping they would all drop out and let someone worthwhile run.

We often get the worst people for candidates. Make that, we almost always get the worst people for candidates. Logical, since they are shoved down our throats by the GOP-e, or are unelectable, insuring a Rat wins during their turn.

I called McCain something in a last post about the creep not inviting the President to his upcoming funeral. I wasn’t kicked off the Free Republic board the last time for what I said about McCain, but I can’t risk saying it again without getting into trouble with the moderator. It is not good for me to risk providence twice — but my previous comment about McCain as regards to dis inviting the President from his upcoming funeral still holds.

Why is the old bastard burning all his bridges?
Because, he only has one bridge left to cross and that’s to the other side.

She did more to get out the vote for him than he did. I knew she was an excellent pick when the Democrats panicked and attacked her immediately.

"Can we wrap this up by Wednesday?"

You're being way too lenient on the time frame. Since I don't watch any cable or network news programs, the only way I'll find out when he croaks is probably on FR. We should plan a party!

Without Sarah Palin on his ticket, McCain would have lost in one of the biggest landslides in American history.

He would have out-rivaled McGovern

Amen. I didn't vote for him, I voted for Sarah, and hoped he'd $hit the bed so she'd become President.

It can't come soon enough. If an honest history of this era would be written 50 years later, it would show the damage that that songbird did to this country; whether in the military or in the Senate.

Gov. Palin was the only one on the team with real world executive experience. McCain was —is — only a professional complainer and instigator.

I would rather cross that last bridge with forgiveness and humility in my heart. Might be a better way to meet your maker.

"Follow the money."

Soros probably picked McCain up in the aftermath of the Keating Five scandal, knowing full well that McCain could be bought.

Well I watched the debates and McCain didn’t even try to rebuke Bo....he had plenty of ammunition and never once used it....throughout his campaign he just went through the motions. He was nothing more than a ‘prop’.

I would not have voted for McCain either if not for Sarah. I thought for once McCain seemed to have caught a clue about the base.

If you want to understand the lib/commie, foam-at-the-mouth hysteria against Sarah Palin, even though she posed no threat to them after the election, read David Kupelan’s “The Snapping of the American Mind” where Kupelan quotes “Robin of Berkeley.” IT is most interesting....
