THE KEATING FIVE SCANDAL

A Pay-For-Play Scandal from 1989

“McCain: The Most Reprehensible of the Keating Five”

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/mccain-the-most-reprehensible-of-the-keating-five-6431838

“The Keating Five | Top Ten Political Scandals | Rolling Stone”

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/pictures/top-ten-political-scandals-20110926/the-keating-five-0941621

From Wikipedia:

“The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The five senators – Alan Cranston (Democrat of California), Dennis DeConcini (Democrat of Arizona), John Glenn (Democrat of Ohio), John McCain (Republican of Arizona), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (Democrat of Michigan) – were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB). The FHLBB subsequently backed off taking action against Lincoln.

Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed in 1989, at a cost of over $3 billion to the federal government. Some 23,000 Lincoln bondholders were defrauded and many investors lost their life savings.

The substantial political contributions Keating had made to each of the senators, totaling $1.3 million, attracted considerable public and media attention.

After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Cranston, DeConcini, and Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB’s investigation of Lincoln Savings, with Cranston receiving a formal reprimand.

Senators Glenn and McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised “poor judgment”.

McCain and his lackeys were jealous of Palin, that’s for sure.

Yeah, sure. He refused to be released before any of his fellow POW’s. He tried to deceive the enemy as he was trained to do, he didn’t ask for special treatment, even as his captors threatened and subsequently carried out torture(s) on him. He returned from Vietnam as a hero among heroes, recovered and eventually adopted a child...Okay, he’s no Sargent York but he certainly is not “evil” and the vast majority of people who know enough about him would never say that he is. So, how is it that you think you should be so quick to condemn the man and on what authority? One need not accentuate the positives but they would have to accentuate any perceived negative(s) in order to make him out to be “evil”. That’s not very “Christian” of you, “mulligan”. Today is Sunday. Maybe you ought to spend some time in church and rethink your assertion that John McCain is “evil”.

The day McLame passes is going to be a very sad day for Americans......we’ll all be subjected to an entire day of headlines, tweets, news stories, talk shows and radio announcements reminding us that he existed.

Not to worry. There’ll still be toilets to clean, hair to wash, Investigation Discovery, and Hallmark Channel. We’ll get through it somehow.

I couldn’t agree more. Sarah Palin was his only chance at ever being President and he back stabbed her from the beginning. She, under much conservative criticism, never went against him or defended herself from his slimy underminig acts. His character has been on full display and I loathe him. I can’t wait until he is no longer relevant and hope his replacement has no ties to him or his communist positions. The irony, which makes me smile, is he launched the hope of true conservatism through his pick of Sarah. It was the spark that ignited our hope and became a full blown fire that eventually helped to elect Trump due to the awakening that Republicans like him were turncoatso committing treason in the name of conservatism. May Justice come quickly to treasonous John.
