I even remember when Jon Lovitz played Dukakis in a debate with Carvey’s George Bush, Lovitz pans, “How am I losing to this guy?” to audience applause.

That’s right… Rob Schneider is the guy Tina Fey went after when lamenting the death of Jan Hooks. I always wondered what her beef with him was. Now it turns out he’s just a guy who understands why Baldwin ain’t really all that..

SNL began in the 70’s as irreverant humor against the elites but has been a reliable tool of the elites since the 90’s. It’s “A Prairie Home Companion” with pop music and raw snark.

"Today Mel Brooks would never have made the first movie."

Can you imagine what "the critics" would say for a movie like 'The Producers'? They would go into a tizzy watching the dancers sing Springtime for Hitler...

Not entirely accurate. SNL had an obvious liberal bias from the first season. But he’s right, it wasn’t always as hateful.

In light of this fiasco corespondents dinner, it’s good that we have youtube and they have old clips of SNL skits like this. The reason I say this is that it’s out there for everyone to see. It’s not just people like us who lived through this saying ‘back in the old days it was different’. You can look at how SNL skits are today and how they were back then and immediately see the tone and tenor of political humor is completely different. It’s vicious today vs. merely poking fun back then.

I’m sure we could view clips of correspondents dinner ‘roastings’ from the 80’s and compare them to what is said today and see similar things. I’ll bet it would be good natured poking and making fun of while today it’s just vicious like Cobert and this woman Michelle Wolff. No surprise that they both come from Jon Stewarts the daily show....

Yeah, what happened at the Correspondent's dinner was not really funny, it was done more for shock value. I've not bothered with watching it, but from what I've read on FR, the audience response was one of disbelief rather than laughter.

I've said in the past that liberals can't do political shows - not for lack of material, but for lack of diversity. "I think George W. Bush is an idiot." "Me too!" "Me too!" "Me too! Oh, and I think he's a moron, as well! "yeah!" "yeah!!". And so on...

However, the culture has devolved enough in the past 20 years so that the above passes as entertainment, or even political discourse. It's sad.

Meanwhile, humor suffers as it's slowly snuffed out by the perpetually offended. I can chuckle at Donald Trump; there's plenty of material there for certain! However, find me a liberal who will laugh at a joke about Obama, or feminism, or (pick your liberal sacred cow). They won't, and in fact, will attack the humorist for not being inoffensive enough.

You only need to watch TV for 15 minutes to determine that the only group allowed to be the butt of a joke is straight white guys.
