The Russians are what they have been since the late ‘80’s, a paper tiger. If Trump truly wanted to take the Russians down a peg or two, just simply initiate a new arms race, they’d hang on a little longer than they did with Reagan, but eventually go bankrupt.

S-400...failed to launch so much as a single SAM in response

Not even a miss? Did the Russians turn it off after we assured them none of their forces were being targeted?

Anti-air is becoming an economics game. How much does a SAM cost? What is its effectiveness? Could you potentially use your entire inventory to counter a drone strike and then get hit by a manned air strike?

Iron Dome missiles cost $45000 each. The missiles they are shooting down average $1000-1500?

Every last missile hit its target while the mighty S-400, Slayer of Missiles, failed to launch so much as a single SAM in response.

That's called 'holding your cards close to your chest.'

Well, their air defense systems didn't work as advertised in the 80's either.

the list of the various changing russian claims of the S-400 from shooting down to 70 allied missiles to “well, we didn’t use them at all on purpose” and everything in between, OUGHT to be powerful lessons to Freepers here who lap up every word of russian propaganda posted here.

OTOH, it looks to me like much of the russian propaganda here is posted by repeat offenders who i suspect are actual russian trolls themselves ... something else Freepers should keep in mind when they chime in on how great the russians are ...

The Syrians fired a number of missiles – perhaps as few as two – after the strike occurred. They hit nothing.

Well, they hit something ...

The Russians couldn’t fire the S-400 missiles because they didn’t turn on their tracking radar.

The S-400 radar is very poor below 3,500 feet. What the Russians did was send a “look down” version of their AWACs platform to patrol off the coast west of Tartus.

That’s the only way they would have been able to detect low flying cruise missiles.

Had the Russians turned on their S-400 radar we would have been able to see the strength and quality of that signal at various altitudes and distances and know what future counter-measures to use.

Then we had upwards of 13 aerial tankers out in the Med to further convince them there would be an air launched cruise missile attack.

Surprise! We attacked mainly from the east with B-1B bombers, for the first time use of AGM-158 JASSM cruise missiles.

The Russians were told to shut down their S-400 radar or they would lose it to our Weasels. They cleared out of a large part of Syria for the same reason.

When reading about Russian Weapons Systems always remember that the people reporting on them always imbue them with magic that makes them unbeatable by anyone ever and in the future.

It is not a case of a S-400 failure, but a case of being ordered to stand down. No Russian assets were targeted, no Russian was harmed. it would not be a surprise if the Russians were informed of the targets before the strike.

Target Russian bases and assets and watch the S-400 batteries linked to S-300x batteries come up and take names.

This writer i off in left field. Or just plain left out.

If humans are relied upon to sense incoming missiles and the system manually fired, it will be ineffective. There's no excuse for the failure from the perspective of technically inclined people. Assad's followers, like so many others before, were fooled into throwing away their efforts on a one-sided alliance with a fraud.

Words from an author who wrote about the AK-47:
Mr. KAHANER: Basically, it's the anti-Western cache of it. And we all sort want to be a little bit outside but not too far outside, so it reminds us of terrorists. And you know, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, so we all sort of think, oh boy, we've got a little bit of Che Guevara in us. And this accounts for the popularity of the weapon.

Plus I think that in the United States it's considered counterculture, which is always something that citizens in this country always kind of like. We see it in out t-shirts, we see it in our greeting cards, we see it on our TV programs. It's kind of sticking a finger in the eye of the man, if you will.

Larry Kahaner, AK-47: The Weapon That Changed the Face of War
