Common sense is the complete stranger from whom weve grown apart.
This week, perhaps the same as you, I learned something I never before considered, let alone gave a first thought: The expression cotton pickin" as in wait a cotton pickin minute is racially insensitive, if not a free-standing racist expression.
Having never before considered that, it makes sense as black slaves served as Americas cotton pickers. I dont recall ever speaking or writing the expression, but Im now sensitive to the good idea that I never should.

Btw, I have a friend who uses the phrase, pickin high cotton,

Hmmmm strange...for all these years I thought the phrase was ‘$h!ttin’ in high cotton.
NOW it makes sense....
Almost as ‘cornfusing’ as the song Brown Eyed Girl (1967) which took on MANY MANY meanings...
To those in the Pacific area it was ‘heard’ as Round Eyed Girl.
To those adventurous young virile males it meant going where most men have NEVER went before when it came to young (or old lasses) Brown Eyed Girl.
Of course the singer was referring to his girl who had brown eyes...Brown Eyed Girl
When I first heard the phrase (pickin’ high cotton) I had to ask for a translation. It is not, as my philosophy prof used to say, intuitively obvious even to the most casual observer.

True but in THIS case, when you really ponder it, it makes complete sense -when used in the ‘proper’ form...
Pickin in tall/high cotton means NO stooping for a bit.
Of course by my thinking ‘$h!ttin’ would automatically mean the ‘cleansing material was/is close at hand’ BUT can’t imagine a real ‘stoop laborer’ wasting his money on a ‘wiper’....
Sometimes we/I just read too much into to little...HA HA!!
Oh,I agree. As soon as the phrase was explained, it made perfect sense.
Another niggling naysayer of the press.
Tennessee Ernie Ford’s patented saying, “Bless your pea-pickin’ heart,” comes to mind. Is THAT recist?
IIRC from the movie, in his early years, Johnny Cash picked cotton.
Truth is Donovan is the “THUNDER BLUNDER” things have gone downhill since his arrival.
And they be as white as the day is long.
