High Sheriff Earl Lee was legendary, a friend to citizens and a terror to malefactors.

There was a famous car chase here a number of years ago - armed robber fled Atlanta with a gaggle of squad cars in pursuit. We were watching on TV, suddenly he pulled over and got out of the car, hands up.

"Must have run out of gas," I said to my husband. But then a deputy got in the car, cranked it, and moved it. WHAT?

Then we noticed the sign in the background "WELCOME TO DOUGLAS COUNTY."
