Puerto Rico suffers island-wide power outage

Puerto Rico has suffered an island-wide power outage, Puerto Rico's power authority said Wednesday -- nearly seven months after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island's infrastructure and its electrical grid.

The authority said it estimates power will be restored within 24 to 36 hours. The cause of the blackout is unclear.

The massive outage comes less than a week after a fallen tree knocked out service to 870,000 customers, about half the power authority's clients, across a broad swath of the US territory.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, a frequent critic of recovery efforts since the September hurricane, tweeted Wednesday: "The entire electrical system in Puerto Rico collapses AGAIN! Back to September 20."

Puerto Rico, home to more than 3 million US citizens, has grappled with widespread power outages for months since Hurricane Maria devastated it.

Puerto Rico's power outage is now the second-largest blackout in history

Puerto Rico has lost 3.4 billion customer-hours of electricity service due to Maria, according to an analysis released Thursday by the economic data analytics and policy firm Rhodium Group. It's the largest blackout in US history and the second largest in the world -- after the outage caused when Typhoon Haiyan tore the Philippines in 2013, killing more than 6,000 people.

She's like Schumer, she identifies problems and feels for those effected, then does nothing.

The media worked hard to make Hurricane Maria into Trump’s”Katrina”, the way the media pushed the narrative that everything that happened as a result of Hurricane Katrina was Bush’s fault.

Cut this island loose. Hell, just bail the f’ers out in exchange for being their own sovereign nation and no US citizenship.

From what I had read, 70% of the island power distribution system was very third world and dilapidated. The hurricane exposed that major deficiency as it could not be safely put back in service but, instead, required a full rebuild.

Rocky islands of volcanic geology aren’t very suited to underground distribution or substations. Even when you cut a duct bank into rock, it still becomes a natural drainage channel rather than protection. All power distribution then becomes necessary to hurricane-wind load standards for overhead line systems — problematic at best.

Hard to imagine the level of fraud and corruption it takes not to fix the grid after seven months...

Didn’t Congress just give these guys like $38,000,000,000?

This is like having to fill out the deposit slip for the guy who just mugged you because he can’t write.

Perhaps they should go back to candles and lanterns. Electricity seems to be above their pay grade.

How much of it went straight to the politicians' pockets?

$37,999,999,995.

They used five bucks to buy a flashlight.

They didn’t budget any money for batteries, so they’re going back to Congress for another $38,000,000,000.

Maybe some day, a Congressman will see the light.

It's become embarrassingly obvious that Puerto Ricans
are unable to govern themselves. It's just another
Latin American, third world dump. The problem with
Puerto Rico is not hurricanes, or lack of money, or electrical
power failures. The problem is the people who live there.
