Boulder files lawsuit against ExxonMobil, Suncor over climate change

BOULDER, Colo. -- At a rally on Pearl Street in Boulder on Tuesday, city and county leaders announced they will be suing two major energy producers, ExxonMobil and Suncor, alleging they are responsible for climate change.

"This is about fiscal responsibility, it's about climate accountability," Boulder Mayor Suzanne Jones said.

"Local governments simply cannot afford to foot the bill of climate change alone so we are asking for compensation for those companies who have benefited tremendously huge profits from fossil fuels."

Matt Dempsey with the Western Energy Alliance, a group that advocates on behalf of oil and gas producers, called the action a "political stunt" by Boulder leaders.

"This is a media stunt, this is a way to look like they are doing something. Meanwhile, the oil and gas industry is doing substantial efforts to address climate change," Dempsey said.

Aren’t they responsible also since they use the fossil fuels? What whackos.

No, this is an attempt at grabbing Other People's Money (OPM).

Well, in the interests of not offending the City of Boulder, those companies can always agree to not sell any of their products within the borders of the People’s Revolutionary Commune of Boulder.

Are the city and county leaders also into smoking marijauna? It is called dope for a reason.

Do the city and county leaders understand science? Climate change has been occurring for millions of years. Climate change is caused by the Sun. Mankind has nothing to do with it.

The level of stupidity is unbelievable! Maybe not, they are ignoring the damage done to the safety and security of residents by allowing the production and consumption of marijuana.

What a scam! The city of Boulder must be in fiscal trouble. I doubt the mayor is doing this to address climate change!

May I recommend the defendant hire Joe Bastardi as an expert witness?

That is what they should do, but notice that the WEA guy responded as if climate change is a given. When are these companies going to grow a backbone and tell these lefty idiots to pound sand?

Exxon fought the Valdez spill lawsuit for 24 years and paid millions in legal fees, finally settled for $900 Million. BP settled in a couple of years and paid $20 Billion for the Deepwater Horizon spill. Hello Boulder city taxpayers.

Always go after the deep pockets in liberal courts. I guess the citizens on Boulder did not contribute to any alleged global warming.

Due to an apparent conflict of interest Suncor and Exxon should stop selling any of their products in the Boulder City Limits until this lawsuit is settled. Then the gas station owners who contract with the above companies should sue the city of Boulder for lost business.

Cut Boulder off. No more fuel deliveries, natural gas/propane, oil, plastics, metals, electricity. Don’t sell them anything made from oil/gas/mining. Let ‘em freeze and starve to death in the dark.

they will be suing two major energy producers, ExxonMobil and Suncor, alleging they are responsible for climate change.

How much change are they responsible for? What is the damage due to that change? Show all your math.

Supposedly, the Boulder effort is part of a nation wide campaign to extract money from big oil. The fact Of the matter is that the sun burns brighter and the Earth gets warmer. The sun burns less bright and the Earth gets cooler.

...and people need to remember, even if you buy that there’s been warming, which I don’t, the claim is still only around 0.5C - that’s it!

If the earth is that fragile it would not exist as it does today. I can’t imagine ANYTHING that would be so catastrophic due to such slight changes.

They’re just making assertions, not providing proof of anything.
