Half the trial team that prosecuted the first Twin Peaks defendant last year is leaving McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reynas office.
Michael Jarrett, Reynas first assistant, and Brody Burks, who also was part of the Jacob Carrizal trial team and who also has been involved in handling Twin Peaks biker shootout cases, have submitted notices that they will be leaving the office.
Reyna did not return phone calls Tuesday.
Jarrett, 41, came in as Reynas first assistant when Reyna took office in January 2011 and has prosecuted several capital murder cases and murder cases.
He prosecuted Carrizal, Dallas chapter president of the Bandidos motorcycle group, with Reyna, Burks and Amanda Dillon. He formerly worked in Dallas and Williamson counties as a prosecutor.
Jarrett will be working for the Texas Farm Bureau in Waco.
Jarrett received a bit of notoriety in November 2013 when he accidentally shot a window out in the district attorneys office, narrowly missing the head of another prosecutor.
Jarrett inadvertently fired the weapon while examining a colleagues new Glock .40-caliber pistol.
No one was injured. The bullet struck a brick wall outside the district attorneys office.
Reyna demoted Jarrett but later reinstated him as first assistant after the resignation of veteran prosecutor Greg Davis.
With Jarrett and Burks leaving, it remains unclear who Reyna will assign to handle the pending Twin Peaks cases.
Carrizals trial ended in mistrial in November after jurors could not reach unanimous verdicts on any of the three counts against him.
The McLennan County District Attorneys Office hand-picked Carrizal to be tried first among 154 bikers indicted at the time in the Twin Peaks case.
I made a decision that I thought was in the best interest for my family and I am looking forward to this new chapter in my career,

Rats swim away from a sinking ship. The smart guys will get out while they can.
I just imagine their are leaving ahead of Reyna’a replacement taking office and firing them.
WOW! Working for the Texas Farm Bureau, that’s a step up.................

Jarrett received a bit of notoriety in November 2013 when he accidentally shot a window out in the district attorneys office,

My thoughts exactly.
They didn’t vote Reyna out? Dumb.
He was primaried in March.
He's a lame duck until January.
Dudette.
Have there been any trials yet on this ambush?
How many of the bikers were shot by police?
How many bikers were shot by other bikers?
How many police were shot by bikers?
Just wondering?
One. Hung jury.
How many of the bikers were shot by police?
At least 4.
How many bikers were shot by other bikers?
At least 1.
How many police were shot by bikers?
None.
Dudtette, really?
That perfectly explains the hysterical comments on this subject in the last year.
IBTG BTW
He's a lame duck until January.
Ahh... good. Thanks. I haven't been keeping a close eye on all this as much as I did for first year.
Yes, I mean him, and am surprised to find out he’s actually a chick!
Dudette? Really? Or just supposing from the posts?
She has corrected people on other threads.
Jarrett will be the 24th assistant district attorney to quit or be fired since Reyna took office.
Assistant D.A. Brady Burks is also quitting but he will remain connected to criminal law, Burks also participated in the Carrizal trial, mostly as an appeals specialist who occasionally drafted and argued bench motions. He is moving to Austin to become a criminal justice advisor to Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Five months after the Carrizal trial ended three of the four prosecutors who failed to make their case against Jake Carrizal are either gone or going. Only Dillon, who supported Reyna’s campaign in 2010, remains.
