Climate Change Is Causing a Dangerous Uptick in Cases of Lyme Disease
Pacific Standard ^ | April 16, 2018 | by Gabriela Serrato Marks

After reading Mary Beth Pfeiffer's engrossing new book, Lyme, you will probably want to kill any tick you can find, donate to Lyme research, and find out if you are at risk for tick-borne diseases.

Spoiler alert: Your risk is likely increasing. Ticks, some of whom carry the pathogenic bacteria that causes Lyme, can now survive in environments where they would have frozen to death 30 years ago. The good news is that there's a lot of new research coming out about stopping and treating tick-borne illnesses, and a good new book that connects the dots between climate change, ticks, sick people, and policy.

As our planet's climate warms and ticks are more able to spread their infections, even more people will be infected around the world. If we don't find effective treatments for Lyme and agree on how to address these illnesses, the problem will become even more unmanageable.

Pfieffer's book is one of few places to get this sort of information on the history of Lyme and how it is connected to changing climate—writing on Lyme is usually directed at people with the disease and focuses on addressing their symptoms. It isn't the first piece published about Lyme and climate change, but it presents an in-depth view of a complex research field.

Drive 20 miles south. That about matches the change in average temperature during the past 25 years. Notice how many more ticks there are? Exactly.

Actually, its more like 100-fold since 1900 - but to be fair to the conservationists, deer had been over-hunted leading up to that time and their population numbers were quite low.

The bottom line is, there are more white-tails now than there were when the settlers first landed at Jamestown. And populations of Mule Deer, Blacktails and others are currently higher than at any time since the early 1700s.

Bull Obama.
No reason arguing against these clowns any more.
Each day I see at least two different “crisis” supposedly caused by climate change.
Of course, climate change has never occurred before.

And there is a lot more interaction with deer and people living in the suburbs.

Was driving through South Carolina late at night a few years back and was like a glowing eyed deer night of the living dead in some rural neighborhoods.

Two things that do not actually exist...

Lyme disease (until you find a quack who will tell you have it, after you have already seen at least 5 doctors who told you that it is a phony disease) and...

Global Warming (Until you start believing that Al Gore is NOT a leftist guru bent on global taxation to fund projects and green schemes that should never receive public funding in any format, and many of them heavily invested in by none other than Al Gore himself.)

Pfieffer makes a compelling argument that Lyme is expanding because of human influences on the environment, from warming temperatures to killing deer.

It is simply not possible to make a "compelling argument" (except possibly to an eco-wacko) that killing deer causes an increase in Lyme disease. Deer-ticks rely on deer to live and to propagate. If there were no deer, there would be no deer-ticks. Fewer deer means fewer-deer ticks. It really is that simple.

Have you seen any humans riding on the backs of these deer? Because that’s pretty much the only way you’re going to get it... I live in Canada and know plenty of deer hunters... So far, none of them have contracted Lyme disease, but in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal Canada... Three cities where sighting a deer is to say the least unusual, the most cases seem to occur. Grew up, played in, built forts in and lived near the woods my entire life and not only have I never been bitten by a deer tick... I’ve never been bitten by a tick EVER!.

The deer population used to be well under control in the Northeast. And then the left took over and the population exploded. Get rid of the deer, or at least keep them under control, and Lyme goes away. It’s a nasty bug, very nasty, and I question the sanity anyone that even goes camping now in that part of the country, it’s totally infested.

Whatever it is that these government scientists are saying, no one can make simple predictions about a system as complex as global climate. We know climate changes naturally, but how do you distinguish it from “man made”? You can’t. You’d need a control study for comparison: one Earth with humans and another without. The most ridiculous assertion is that AGW is “settled science”. There is no such thing as “settled science”. The scientific method is a cyclical process with no end point. Only someone lacking a basic understanding of science would claim anything is settled.

I have a wooded lot out back.
Last May i went out with a bag to pick up trash blown out their during the winter and over the course of a few days found around a few ticks embedded.
My last residence a few miles away also had a tick infested wooded lot behind it.
ticks SUCK.........literally.
