He “made his fortune” by being born into the Mellon banking family.
If he had 2 million before speculating on Ripple, it probably means he started with 20 million.

Or maybe his family knew of his behavior and kept his money in a trust fund to shield him from self-destructive excess.

But a profitable investment turned into a windfall of cash that accomplished the same end

He was a great nephew of Andrew W. Mellon (Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover).

(BTW, the "W." stands for "William," not "Water")
