Straight rip off of an f-15.

Looks as stealthy as a brick. Is that the best theyve got. The Russians have come up with some beautiful aircraft, this isn’t one of them.

I’d be interested if the Russians have been able to get any new engines for the Mig-31 this century.

“MiG-31 can fly in outer-space”

Hog wash.

"The Russians have come up with some beautiful aircraft, this isn’t one of them."

I've always thought that the MiG-3 had nice lines:

Anything traveling at Mach 10 should (in theory) be incapable of radical manuvering without breaking up due to g forces.

The article states that the hypersonic missile flies at Mach 10, and it can carry a nuclear warhead.

Mach 10 is about 7,000 mph. That’s 2 miles per second.

Can a nuclear explosion actually maintain its coherence at that speed?

Every hypersonic weapon I have read about uses kinetic energy, not explosive energy.

Kh-15 is actually a Mach 5 missile. Hypersonic definition is Mach 5 or better. Nasty little bugger. Current effort probably centered around being a carrier killer. Also useful to scare NATO countries. Will likely require a Patriot missile upgrade. Challenging.

the MiG-25, was also upgraded to get the capability of striking ground targets with free-fall bombs

Well, it has the maneuverability of a B-17, so why not make it a bomber? It's great speed made it a one-shot mission, so slow with external stores makes some sense.

The asphalt shingles protecting the upper surface of the engine compartment give it a quaint look.

ICBMs are a lot faster than that.

Our A-10 isn’t too pretty either. But deadly in its mission.

Mebbe read up on the speed a nuclear detonation runs at. Talking light only going a few yards in the total time of the event.

Straight rip off of an f-15.

Actually this is a derivative of the MiG-25 Foxbat, which was originally designed to intercept the B-70 and SR-71. It is a pure interceptor, with no dogfight capabilities. This was not necessary, since it’s primary mission was to intercept bombers. The same applies to other aircraft designed specifically for the VV-PVO (a separate air force and the Soviet equivalence to the USAF Air Defense Command) such as the Tu-128, Su-9, Su-11, Su-15, and Yak-25. It’s design also pre-dates the F-15.

Re: “ICBMs are a lot faster than that.”

On their way up, yes.

As far as I know, the warhead is in free fall on the way down, and it decelerates very quickly after launch phase and once it strikes the atmosphere.

I would be really surprised to learn that it detonates at faster than 1,500 mph.

Anyway, I spent 10 minutes on Google and came up with lots of information on launch speed and reentry speed, but nothing on impact speed.

I saw several “terminal velocity” numbers, but those look exactly like the reentry speeds, so I'm dubious.

This is old school technology and the high speed dictates the shape but that does not mean it's not deadly effective.

Russia has a unique solution to the problem of how a bankrupt ex Super Power can maintain military relevance in a high tech world.

Their solution is ominous and poses a very realistic threat.

They minimize development costs by up grading existing high speed, high altitude platforms like the Mig 31 and Backfire Bomber Tu-22 as bomb trucks for hypersonic missiles carrying small, low yield, battlefield tactical micro nuke warheads .

Very unsubtle but potentially very effective and difficult ( and expensive) to defend against

Warthogs are awesome to watch perform, their maneuverability is spectacular. Quite the show-stopper.

Looks similar to our xp-37 and xp-46 built by Curtiss. Therefore a good looking aircraft
