Mark Steyn: Chappaquiddick
SteynOnline ^ | April 14, 2018 | Mark Steyn

As I wrote a few days ago, I had minimal expectations of Chappaquiddick The Movie, which opened last week despite the best efforts of the Kennedy family and their various retainers and enablers. I have always been revolted by the fact that Ted, after killing Mary Jo Kopechne, did not have the decency to do a John Profumo and retire from public life for the rest of his days - and I was even more revolted by the way Massachusetts voters did not have the decency to impose that choice upon him...

That combination of outsiders and neophytes may be one reason why this film is considerably more gripping and potent than a cookie-cutter limousine-liberal yawnfest like The Post...

This is a more sophisticated and blackly comic view of the nature of politics than, say, George Clooney's Ides of March. The acidic glamour of power corrodes even Mary Jo's fellow Boiler Room Girls. No sooner are they informed that their friend is dead than one of them steps forward to volunteer: "What can we do to help the Senator?" The ladies themselves, having kept their silence for half-a-century, are said to deny this version of events, and the words themselves are put in the mouth of a fictional Boiler Roomer created for the movie: "Rachel" (Olivia Thirlby). But, whatever their motivations, the actions of almost everyone in this tale facilitate the replacement of one victim by another: Edward M Kennedy.

Chappaquiddick is an excellent film that deserves to find an audience...

Rats get away with murder and are rewarded with a lifetime job payed by the American taxpayer, we should be a shamed of ourselves for allowing this.

I attended the court hearing that took place in Connecticut a few years ago in which Skakel was requesting a new trial.I heard him testify...under oath. The filthy punk accused everyone but the Easter Bunny for her murder. He accused "two black guys" (an exact quote)...he accused the live-in tutor they had...he even accused his own brother (with God as my Judge,it's true).

I did get to chat with Martha Moxley's mother for a few minutes during a break...a thoroughly delightful lady.

Thank you! I guess it might be easy to get out of a car on a bridge before you put it in neutral and push it in the water. Once it’s already in the water... not so easy.

I don't know which is the more fitting symbol of the Kennedy family...a cheesy neck brace or the shaft of an expensive golf club (as was thrust through the neck of Martha Moxley).

Either will work - as might a bottle of whiskey - but regardless of which symbol is preferred, there is always a woman close at hand who is miserable and/or about to be dead.

...Teddy was the "Conscience" of the Senate...

No, the KKK wizard, Robert Byrd, was the conscience of the senate.

There is much evil and sleaze in the democrat party, it's hard to label them appropriately.

The only thing about that movie is listening the Kennedy’s to pronounce the “C” word in the title.

Only after he died did they have a moment of clarity w/ electing Scott Brown, regardless of the fact he turned into a Rink disaster. FWIW, Jeff Kuhner 680am WRKO Boston denotes MA maybe more conservative than we realize, that in fact, the Boston collegiate community tips the scales every election cycle more than we know, interesting concept non the less, I’d add the 5 college community in Amherst to that block.

The fact that the Massachusetts voters continue to vote in pathetic liberal reprobates with more baggage than a carousel at a busy airport is a testimony to the moral and intellectual destruction visited on that state since the early 50s.

Before long, we may be back to 48 states, with two pockets of isolated moral and intellectual cancer, one on each coast.

Actually, the whole affair (pun intended!) is wrought with disinformation and outright lies. The “Hero Of Chappaquiddick” (THoC) claimed he had ‘no recollection of how he exited the vehicle’. That’s because, folks, at the time of the accident HE WASN’T IN THE VEHICLE!

When THoC saw Deputy Luck he panicked, feared he’d be recognized (probably the only time EVER a Kennedy ‘feared’ being recognized!) raced off in his mommy’s Oldsmobile in the opposite direction and bailed out to swim back to Edgartown, a short, easy swim. He probably told Mary Jo to drive back to the ferry dock or to the cottage. They had SURREPTITIOUSLY left the cottage for reasons we can only assume(!). She had left her pocketbook and personal items in the cottage when they had sneaked out. Obviously, they intended to return to the cottage after they concluded whatever ‘business’ (monkey, most likely!) they were about.

Mary Jo, unfamiliar with the roads and being, more than likely, ‘half-in-the-wrapper’ perhaps scared she’d be seen driving ‘the Senator’s car’ and, thereby, put THoC in a bad light, drove too fast and, sadly, straight off the bridge over Poucha Pond. She did NOT drown; she suffocated, breathing, desperately, the last air trapped at the floor (which was now where the roof would be, normally) while THoC swam back to the island totally unaware of her plight.

In the morning, unaware that his latest ‘conquest’ had driven into the Olds into the drink and died, THoC donned his yachting togs and strolled, unconcernedly, onto the porch at the Shiretown Inn. He chatted amiably with two other residents and appeared totally unconcerned with or by anything. It was not until his cousin and a factotum arrived in a panic, rushed him inside and informed him of the events of that early morning, where locals had discovered his mommy’s Olds upside down in the pond with Mary Jo still inside, DEAD, that he evidenced ANY level of concern, panic, upset, call it what you will. His concern was for HIMSELF, not Mary Jo, of that we can all be CERTAIN!

From this point one can only assume what transpired further (actually ALL of this is supposition but, using intelligence guided by experience, it MAKES TOTAL SENSE!) as the ‘brain trust of THoC cobbled together the ‘tissue of lies’ that became the ‘official narrative’ of what had transpired.

THoC actually thought he’d be hailed as a hero in the scenario he and his rump swabs cobbled together. He must have been stunned at how totally wrong he, and they, was/were.

But, the voters of the People’s Republic of Massachusetts have never been known as shrewd or discerning. Or intelligent! They re-elected that despicable piece of human debris time and time again. We can all thank him for the debacle that is our immigration system today; his ‘keepers’ (Soros?)told him what to say, think (as though he could!) and do. He was happy to keep doing what he did best: drink, drink, drink, molest, harass and make an outright idiot of himself. This later aspect came all to easily to that drunken slob!

And to the endless regret of those of us calling New Hampshire home, far too many of his fellow MassHoles (as they proudly proclaim themselves!), have moved up here and brought their socialist world view with them. We aren’t a blue state yet but we certainly are NOT as red as we once, not too long ago, were

I don’t know but when I was in Switzerland I had read he had climbed the Matterhorn some years earlier so he was somewhat athletic in his younger years. The whole story he told seems a stretch to me though so your question is pertinent. All we know is Mary Jo was dead and in the car. How she got there we don’t know for sure and of course a number of theories exist.

"...manage to locate enough humanity in the empty waddling husk of Teddy..."

Teddy Kennedy was not exceptional. He was typical!

Washington, with the enormous power concentrated there, is a magnet for contemptible waddling husks. It's no wonder that the power hungry low-lifes reacted with unprecedented viciousness and depravity when Donald Trump said: "The Party's over. I'm going to clean up Washington." It threatened their turf, and they have fought like the gutter rats that they are to protect their privileges.

No one will manage to locate anything resembling humanity in that entire army of empty waddling husks.

And just think: there are millions of people who actually want to increase the power, authority, and privileges of these vile predators!

No one even registered surprise when they dubbed Teddy "The Lion of the Senate."

Talk about disgust!

Joan Vennochi's words are put in Ted's mouth: He says defensively that all men are flawed - "Moses had a temper, Peter betrayed Jesus." And my cheap riposte - "Moses didn't leave a girl at the bottom of the Red Sea" - is given to the outraged Joe Gargan, already on his way out, supplanted by better, colder, harder fixers.

Hmmm, movie sounds like it might be worth watching...

Luck said the Olds sped off toward the infamous bridge as he approached it parked in cemetery road. Also if mjk had dropped him off at the ferry why didn’t he say so; that would have been an easier set of lies to construct with a great reduction of blame/shame for leaving a drowning girl friend.
