Both sides WERE generally civil and moral. Not so today.
Even now, I wouldn’t disagree. Outside of NYC and the Major urban areas and college towns, NY is a pretty Red State. Trump did win 46 out of the 62 counties of NY, including the county I grew up in, which is 50 miles from Manhattan and has been GOP since Lincoln.

I think that is probably true today.
People who have no lives outside of “blogging” or being tied to the digital umbilical cord might think the values are different. MOST people really have better things to do with their lives.
I would suggest that you could start a conversation with anyone and after a while, if you are being really honest, you can agree on 90% of stuff. The things that divide us can be compromised. But no one is willing to give an inch these days.

On the demographics of more than 95% of legal citizens being white European nominal Christians, on the public schools teaching from the Bible and a Christian hymnal as recommended by Thomas Jefferson, on the greatly slower pace of social change before the Industrial Revolution and telephonics, on the lack of national viral subersive media, on the lack of birth control and with that, the well-established social norms regarding a marked difference between the sexes and what were considered acceptable sex roles.
