Members of the Humboldt Broncos were headed to the town of Nipawin for a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League semifinals playoff game when the crash happened north of Tisdale.
Fourteen others were injured and taken to a hospital. Three were in critical condition, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told CNN partner CTV.
Twenty-eight people including the driver were on the bus at the time of the accident, police said.
Authorities have not identified the victims and would not confirm whether they were players or coaches. Junior league hockey teams are for athletes ages 16 to 20.

Back in about 1986, the same kind of tragedy happened to that team when they were known as the Swift Current Broncos. Lindy Ruff, the Dallas Stars’ coach, lost a younger brother in that accident and Colorado Avalanche Hall of Famer Joe Sakic was a player on that team who survived.

This breaks my heart. My eldest played hockey. My second was also a traveling athlete. It just hurts to think of this and my heart goes out to everyone involved especially the families of the ones killed. Prayers up.

I remember that one, but Swift Current is a different team. They are Major Junior, while Humboldt is Junior A (tier 2). Regardless, terrible accident.

My goof, I guess I got confused by the team nickname and locale. The Swift Current incident took place when one of the biggest POS’ in the game (Graham James) was their coach.

Unbelievable crash on flat ground, no weather conditions to speak of and in broad daylight... the east-west road has stop signs while the north-south Hwy 35 route does not. Since the bus was reportedly going from Tisdale to Nipawin for their game, one assumes that the bus was going north.

Terrible. Condolences to all.

Yeah - I looked at the intersection on Google maps. Cross-road has a stop-sign with blinking light. News reports say the 18-wheeler T-boned the bus, making me think he just blew through the stop sign. From a north-bound bus driver’s perspective, he’d see approaching traffic on the cross-road from west-to-east, but east-to-west traffic wouldn’t be visible until the last moment, due to a wooded area.
Prayers to the families and loved ones.

Exactly... I don’t believe has been reported yet if the truck was driving east or west but if going, west, I suppose sun in the eyes might have played a role in this.
To: Be Free
From the picture I saw posted on social media, the tractor-trailer truck must have
T-boned the bus at a pretty high velocity. Even if the passengers on the bus were wearing seat belts, the force of the crash wouldn't have saved them.

I see this every day on my route to & from work. 4 way stop & I bet 6 out of 10 either blow through or hug the bumper ahead of them going at the same time. If it were an area with a higher speed limit, there would be death every day. Since it is more of a residential area, people just don't care, don't pay attention or have some entitlement. Sad
Prayers for the families, friends, survivors as well as first responders

This story is so sad. I can’t even imagine the pain those families are in right now. The entire town is grieving. I did read the truck driver survived and was questioned but released. Doesn’t sound like (from that)it was his fault.
Prayers up to all involved.
