He appears to most of us as well-spoken, driven, mature and passionate about changing the world an immature loudmouth . Hogg, like millions of students across the country, is also a high school senior who applied to colleges last fall.

And it surprised many math illiterates who suppose that “millions of students across the country” can be accepted into a few elite universities just because they wanna to learn that he didn’t get into all the colleges he applied to.

I recall a story some years ago in The Wall Street Journal about a black high school student in Berkeley with a B average who was unhappy that she had not been admitted to UC Berkeley (perhaps she was on a waiting list). Meanwhile she was being courted by prestigious private colleges like Reed College and (I think) Smith College but wasn't much interested in them. Imagine Reed College courting a white student with a B average.
